No sound (Mint 19 fresh install) <RESOLVED>

Post by Samouk »

I got an old computer from work for my 9-year old kid and installed Tara on it. I'm new to linux, although I've had Qiana for many years on another few computers at home (also recouped from work...). I guess I just never had any problem with Quinas for all these years.

Anyway, just wanted the kid to have something to access web homework and stuff like that, and maybe for him to see that there is something else there, other than Windows.

Upon installing, there was no sound (which was a good thing as he wouldn't be blasting youtube videos). Didn't bother me a lot, but now, I feel bad for the kid watching mute videos, looks kind of stupid.

Anyway, I got him headphones, went through several posts, my main starting point being "Mint 19 Fresh install no sound", but didn't get anywhere.

By the way, I'm testing in a primitive way (playing youtube video). Is there any more sophisticated way via command line? I am envious of one of the newbies (dromia) who tested it via speaker-test and got some sound.

I went through the post “Mint 19 Fresh install no sound” and it didn't fix the problem.

I ran:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
aplay -l
pacmd list-sinks
and downbelow is the result.

When I ran

Code: Select all

pavucontrol
everything looks fine, except one thing. It says that headphones are plugged in, but they were not. Anyway, when I plugged them in, and tried audio, still, there was no sound.

Did

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
added this as the last line

Code: Select all

options snd_hda_intel model=auto
saved, rebooted, no luck.

Then I installed alsa-tools-gui, went to HDAJackRetask, selected "ALC662 rev1" codec, under "Green Line Out" checked the box for "Override" then clicked "Apply now" and tested – no luck. Rebooted the computer (because the user ADee from “Mint 19 Fresh install no sound” somehow got it working after accidental reboot), no luck.
MrEen suggested to delete the files in

Code: Select all

~/.config/pulse/
then issue

Code: Select all

pulseaudio -k
in the terminal, wait 10 seconds then test sound. Did that, waited 30 seconds, no luck.

By the way, these are the files that I deleted, do I need to have them back? And if yes, how?

Code: Select all

isa@isa-HP-Compaq-6200-Pro-SFF-PC:~/.config/pulse$ ls
0be4b885ddb347e5bc70559303dca99f-card-database.tdb

I found another post that I should do something with

Code: Select all

Auto-Mute Mode
but it was not really clear what to do, I put it to

Code: Select all

[Disabled]
It didn't help. I then put it to

Code: Select all

[Line Out+Speaker]
(I forgot what was there before, and this one looked most promising). This didn't help either.

I don't know what to do any more.

Here are the outputs of inxi -Fxz, aplay -l and pacmd list-sinks, if somebody can help.

Code: Select all

Boot from a Live CD/DVD/USB and test sound. If sound works there, I would try a clean install of LM.

Hi Samouk, and welcome to the forum.

First I want to say you did a fantastic job of trying to get sound to work before posting here! Don't worry about the files in ~/.config/pulse as they'll be recreated when necessary (cookie should certainly already be back there.)

I would follow the excellent advice from @Joe2Shoe as the first next step, with one alteration. Stop in BIOS on the way and make sure sound isn't disabled there. I don't know if disabling in BIOS would prevent the card from showing in aplay, but it's worth a look.

Also, is Windows still on the machine? If so, this has worked for some people: Boot into Windows. Ensure sound is working there then do a full shutdown. Wait a minute before powering back up into Mint.

If still no success, paste back the output of running dmesg | grep snd in the terminal.

Good luck.

EDIT to add: Move Auto-Mute back to Disabled.

One thing I forgot to mention.

You said you test with youtube. That is fine, except you should always restart the browser with each fix attempt.

A command line way to test would be aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav which should work in all cases except those that required a reboot.

OK, this is what I've done thus far:

Checked BIOS, the only thing that seemed a bit related to sound I was able to find in Advanced - Device Options - and then a thing opens that has a number of items there, one of the items is "Internal Speaker" which is "Enabled". The rest of BIOS is about power on, storage and stuff like that. The BIOS is "J01 v02.15", and I hoped I would be able to find something like "user manual" for on HP web site, but all what I was able to get is a page on updating BIOS. So, I guess, the only thing that I was able to verify there is that internal speakers are enabled.

Another surprise was Windows. Windows sound didn't work either. I really don't remember if it ever worked, because I never loaded Windows on this computer (and quite frankly, I don't know how Windows is still there, as I have a separate machine for Windows, probably it was default install, and I didn't pay attention).

I will try this option that Joe2Shoe recommended (Boot from a Live CD/DVD/USB and test sound), but it might take a bit longer time, so I'll leave it for tomorrow.

And here is the output of dmesg | grep snd

Code: Select all

One thing worth asking about. When you plugged in headphones, did pavucontrol still say headphones were plugged in?

One option you can try is to plug in the headphones and run hdajackretask, select ALC662 rev1, Click the Override box for the headphones which should be pin 0x1b and change Headphone to Not connected. Then click on Show unconnected pins, select an unconnected pin that is not 0x1b by checking its Override box and change it to Headphone. Click on Apply and see if sound is working now (through the headphones.) If yes, click on Install boot override. Do not click on Install boot override until sound is working.

If that didn't work, I don't know if it's worth trying other unconnected pins.

I'll wait for your next reply before suggesting anything else.

I forgot the other testing method I was going to post earlier:

Code: Select all

speaker-test -t wav -c 6
To stop it, hit Ctrl-c

OK, pavucontrol says Headphones (plugged in) no matter if they're plugged in or not. I tried unplugging them, shutting down, waiting for 1 minute, re-starting again, with headphones in another room, and still says the same thing Headphones (plugged in).

But, then came the surprise.

Guys, I am sure you're going to curse me after this, but since you really tried to be helpful all this time, I got to be honest, even for the price of looking stupid.

Here I go, I opened hdajackretask, and looked for where the headphones could be connected. I remember connecting them to the rear of computer (this was before I took the headphone to another room :) ). Funny thing, it says Green Line Out, Rear side, and the pin is NOT 0x1b like you suspected. This was the turning point which lead to ... (it's embarrasing). 0x1b is for Black Headphone, Front side.

Anyway, I said - let me check which jack is it, this guy says 0x1b, hdajackretask says 0x14. And according to hdajackretask the jack should be a green one, the same color as my headphones. Then it dawned on me - I was connecting to a wrong jack. Blue one, which should be microphone, according to hdajackretask.

But wait! Let me see, what's going on here. I checked the small pics there next to jacks, and honestly, next to green jack, there is this small picture of a note with an arrow "in", and next to blue jack, there is this small picture of a note "out". I don't know, maybe I am missing something, but I would assume that note "in" means something that's getting from outside (microphone) to inside (computer). How could that be headphones? I actually took a picture of it, and once I figure out how to crop it and resize, I'll post it here to redeem myself (BTW - any idea what application can I use for that cropping and resizing job - a simple one, as you can see, I seem to be able to screw up the difficult things - anything as difficult as pair of jacks).

Anyway, I played this speaker-test -t wav -c 6 for I don't know how long. At other times, this "front left front center front right, etc." would probably be annoying, but this time it was music to my ears.

Honestly, arrow "in" and arrow "out" means - I don't know what any more. I'll post the picture tomorrow, and you'll figure it out what's going on (the computer is at kid's room and it's bedtime here in Riyadh).

Thanks a lot to all.

Hey Samouk. I'm so glad you got this working!

The situation with the in/out jacks is not unheard of at all. There've been a couple cases where I was getting ready to tell someone to try plugging their headphones into the mic jack before they got things working another way.

Somehow, the BIOS is misreporting the pins/ports, I believe.

As for a simple image editor, I believe a number of people here use and recommend Pinta for that.

Anyway, happy to have helped. Enjoy.

Re: No sound (Mint 19 fresh install) <RESOLVED>

Now, when I overslept, there are two things that I need to add:

Of course, swapping the jacks was the first thing that I tried, before posting on this forum. However, the agricultural method of testing (playing youtube videos) could have introduced another number of variables (for example, volume control was at three places simultaneously - youtube, this icon on the left next to time, and manual thing on the headphones <-- I did control for these variables, but there could have been others that I didn't know about).

So, I did swap the jacks, and since it was not working, I blamed the headphones, plugged the headphones to another computer and it worked there.

I swear, it wasn't working then.

However, when I decided to revert to this forum, I couldn't afford to swap the jacks upon issuing every single command, so I took a good look at the back of the computer, examined carefully these small pics, they looked convincing, looked at the colors, they didn't look convincing (headphones are green and red, jacks are blue and green) and decided to plug into the jack where the arrow points to "out".

So, the sound must have come up during the troubleshooting, but exactly when, I don't really know, as I was plugged in the wrong jacks.

Here is the picture, take a look yourself how would you interpret it.
DSC_0010.JPG
Last thing - how do I say that this is resolved? I read that you should put <RESOLVED> in the title (which I did), and that's it?

Yeah, I'd misinterpret those ports going strictly on the pics. I've read Green Line Out so many times while trying to help people that I probably wouldn't even notice the pics by the ports, and just plug into green right away at this point.

For the topic change, you should do it on the very first post to make it easier for people to find. Just scroll up to that post and click on the pencil icon and alter the Subject.

Glad you're all sorted out.

For all the people facing the no sound problem do follow these steps as well.
STEP1-Go to the user and group settings and select the user.
STEP2-In the users sections go to groups and select audio.
STEP3-Press ENTER and you are done.
It worked for me :) .

Thanks, XLoganprime. Worked for me. Who would have thought that the default user did not have "audio" checked by default?

I had sound from headphones but not speakers on an old Fujitsu-Siemens laptop S7020D (intel HDU, Realtek ACL260). After trying all these recipes without success, I found a simple solution on a Unbuntu posting for a Lenovo Laptop: Shutdown Mint; remove power; take out battery; press power switch; wait 30 seconds; replace battery; replace power; new start. Somewhere something is apparently not getting initialized at boot!
