No Audio After New Monitor & GFX Card

Hi there! I recently bought a new monitor that uses HDMI and a new graphics card. Prior to this new monitor, I was using an old monitor that uses VGA with no graphics card. My audio worked fine while I had no new monitor and no graphics card. I don't know what's wrong with my computer. I've tried to do things with pulseaudio and it doesn't seem to work. I'm using Apple earbuds. They're the same earbuds I used with my old monitor. If you need any logs or other information, please feel free to ask.

Hi luxorium, and welcome to the forum.

You're probably just playing sound to the wrong place. One way to check that is to start something with sound, then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. At the end of the output, it will tell you the active port it is (attempting) playing to.

To configure things properly, I suggest installing and running PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.)

If you need help with this, just paste the terminal output you got in your next reply.

Okay. I think we need pavucontrol here. Install and run it, then go to the Configuration tab. The Profile that has HDMI settings will probably have multiple options. Hopefully, only one will NOT say (unplugged) that should get you going.

If that doesn't help, first try deleting the files in your ~/.config/pulse directory then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and wait a few seconds before testing.

If still nothing, paste back the results of inxi -Fxz and aplay -l please.

Damn, they're all saying unplugged. Try disconnecting the HDMI cable and reconnecting it.

Thank you for your effort. As soon as my Linux Mint finishes downloading for my USB stick I'm going to try restarting my PC and see if that works. Have a good night.

Go to ALSA control (if you have the volume on your slider, right click and choose "Sound Preferences"
On the Input tab select the Monitor of (your graphics card).
On the Output tab select the graphics card audio, and see if one says "plugged in" in the Selector drop down.
Go to the Hardware Tab and select the HDMI audio source. Try "Test Speakers and see if you hear anything.

Open Pulse Audio Volume Control. In Output Devices tab you should see, or be able to select the HDMI output. If you need to, at the bottom Show: All Output Devices

If no joy here, select the Configuration tab and see if there is an HDMI device in the list that does NOT say "Plugged in". Select that one.

Play something. Go to Playback tab and see if there is any output anywhere. If not, head to the Input tab and see if the "plugged in" HDMI device is selected. Play something again and check again. Go through the tabs again and see if there is any playback showing up anywhere.

Report back with your findings.

Your inxi results did not show any onboard sound. Did you intentionally disable that in the BIOS? It might be worth a shot to go into the BIOS and re-enable sound if possible. The onboard sound can still be disabled in pavucontrol on the Configuration tab by just setting the proper Profile to Off.

Another thing that could help is a full shutdown as opposed to a reboot. Wait a full minute before powering back up.

The inxi results also showed you were still on the default kernel from your install. Like I said above, upgrading the kernel (to the latest 4.15 series kernel) may get this working.

I doubt this is going to work, but does aplay -Dhw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav produce sound?

Does Driver Manager say you're using the recommended driver for that graphics card?

If you run the live dvd/USB you used to install Mint, does sound work there? If not, see if making one with 18.3 works. The thinking here is maybe your system needs an older kernel. If this works when all else failed, we'll need to get you to install the latest 4.4 kernel on your Linux Mint 19 Xfce system.

I'm trying to get audio to play through some earbuds that used to work before I bought a new graphics card and monitor. The earbuds work with my phone and other devices. I've tried a speaker on my PC and that doesn't seem to work either. There isn't a HDMI device in the list that says "Plugged in", sadly. There isn't a thing called "Sound Preferences" in ALSA control, either. If you need any screenshots, don't be afraid to ask.

Have you tried upgrading the kernel? If the newer kernel causes problems, we can walk you through getting back to the one you're using.
