No sound from speakers but works with headphone jack.

Post by grebel »

Hello. This is my first post in these forums.

Okay so here is the problem. I just installed a fresh copy of Linux Mint on a Panasonic CF-C2 Toughbook. I do not have any sound from the internal speakers but I do get sound from the output jack when I hook up headphones or external speakers. I have seen this problem before on a different computer not that long ago but it wasn't as big of a deal because sound wasn't needed. If I leave the headphones or external speakers plugged in when I restart the computer then unplug them once rebooted the sound comes through on the internal speakers but the sound is horrible and out of only one speaker. This is the same thing that I saw on the other computer a while back. I have tried a lot of different solutions that i have found online but to no avail. If anyone else has any ideas or suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Grebel

Hi grebel, and welcome to the forum.

Let's see the output of running aplay -l and inxi -Fxz in the terminal please. There may be a tweak for your sound card.

Also, try deleting the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal when it's sounding crappy to see if it's just a config issue.

Okay, there's no tweak that I think will help.

Have you installed PulseAudio Volume Control? I'd suggest running that and on the Configuration tab make sure the Profile is set to Analog Stereo Duplex, the Output Devices tab is set to the appropriate device and if necessary, the Playback tab is playing to the proper Built-in Audio.

Let me know if that works.

So I tried what you suggested and there has been no change what so ever. I am up for anymore suggestions that you may have.

Thanks

If you usually leave the computer running, and just reboot from time to time, try a full shutdown and wait a few minutes before powering back up.

I remember another toughbook sound issue recently. I'll see if I can find how that one went.

I will give it a try and be waiting to see what else you come up with.

Regarding the one speaker only, in PulseAudio Volume Control on the Output Devices tab are both sliders adjusted the same? If you only see one slider, then they should already be the same, but you can check by clicking on the Lock icon.

Can you be a little more specific about the "horrible" sound? Is it crackles, pops, static or what?

Actually I am only getting sound now when the speaker jack is being used only and it sounds good but nothing what so ever out of the internal speakers. I know that they worked before I installed Mint because it had Windows 7 on it which worked fine

Did you try deleting the files in ~/.config/pulse and running pulseaudio -k?

Without any headphones attached, start a song or video then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. Paste the output back here.

When pasting large blocks of text, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.
