mesa-va-drivers cause red/yellow video playback in gstreamer-based apps like xplayer

Post by jcalcote »

Why do the mesa-va-drivers cause gstreamer-based players like xplayer to render video in red and yellow rather than their proper colors?

Hard to say with no system info at all, copy/paste this to the teminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
And where did you get mesa-va-drivers from?

BTW the mpv devs recommend turning off ALL hardware decoding. It hasn't actually been necessaary for playing video files in the last 15 to 20 years, and can cause problems with certain formats etc that are hard to debug.

The mesa-va-drivers package was installed by default on my Linux Mint 19 system (or at least, something I installed later caused it to be installed as a dependency, but I removed it without any problem so it must have been a soft dependency in that case). I originally discovered this solution to my xplayer (gstreamer) problems from a post by condorman a few months ago. In it, he stated that he had stupidly installed this package (as if he understood exactly why it was a stupid thing to do). I asked him on that post why it was so obvious to him that this was the problem but the moderator closed the ticket for additional responses right after I posted. :(

Please post a link to that thread s others can judge for themselves why or whether it was stupid or not.
