the video goes through but the audio says HDMI unplugged

Hi MintyBoy42, and welcome to the forum.

I'd suggest you install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) and go to the Configuration tab. There should probably be at least 2 profiles on that page, one of which may be set to Off. That one may have the appropriate HDMI audio connection.
