no output through center or lfe

Post by bhola_singh »

Hello,

Latest linux mint Mate. I have an older hp laptop connected to my tv. When I open the Sound control panel, I am able to pick "Digital HDMI 5.1 output", however, only the front R & L speaker product sound during speaker test. Nothing from Center or LFE. I don't have rear surround speakers, so it's essentially a 3.1 setup?

How do I get sound from the Center and LFE speakers?

I have tried setting the following in the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf file and restarted pulseaudio but no difference.

enable-lfe-remixing = yes
default-sample-channels = 6

The weird thing is, if I play a MP3 in VLC I do get sound from Front, Left and Center but not the LFE/subwoofer

Here are the screenshots of the sound control panel

And alsamixer. Make sure LFE isn't muted.

In alsamixer, keep hitting the right arrow key and more options may show up.

EDIT: Oops, you may need to hit F6 to change the sound card first.

I only have one option for sound card, and there is no LFE option even if I hit right arrow

There is no Analog 5.1 options, Analog options are "Stereo Duplex, Stereo etc."

See if this helps. On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, select Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input then in the terminal run speaker-test -t wav -c 6 (use Ctrl+C to stop.)

Any better?

I am assuming you're using an HDMI cable to connect the computer to the TV. Is the TV itself putting out the sound, or does it have a connection to an external speaker system?
