No audio to monitor speakers

Post by Rickf1985 »

I am running Mint 18.3 in a dual boot with Windows 10. Separate drives for each system. The monitor speakers work fine with Windows but not on linux. At one point they did, I believe it was when I was running from the disc before full installation. I have updated everything and the system see the sound card. Headphones will work through the speaker ports but NOT through a usb adapter. This is something I will also need because I use Dragon speaking for speech to text. Here is what I have on there. By the way, the monitor is connected with a serial to HDMI adapter, HDMI on the monitor.

Hi Rickf1985.

I'm afraid your post has me somewhat confused. Instead of asking for clarification at this point, I'll just suggest you install and run PulseAudio Volume Control.

The sound card can be set up on the Configuration tab, and the Output Devices tab has the Port settings to select. When playing something with sound, there will be a box showing what card it is playing to on the Playback tab, that can be changed to other active cards.

I'm hoping that's all that's needed in this case.

If no go, paste back the output of aplay -l and pacmd list-sinks please.

I will install the Pulse Audio and let you know how it works. May take me a while since I am new to Linux. Here is what I am working with now.

Re: No audio to monitor speakers

All right. As of your last post, your HDMI was connected, but if you had tried to play sound, it would have been trying to play through your onboard sound card. There may be an issue with your headphone port, which we can deal with after we get the HDMI connection configured so your monitor speakers function correctly.

The easiest way to install PulseAudio Volume Control is from the terminal with apt install pavucontrol though you can also use the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager.

Once it's installed, you can run it from the Menu or in the terminal with pavucontrol &. Go to the Output Devices tab and make sure the check box is selected next to the NVIDIA GF108 option (or whatever it says for the HDMI option.)

Now play something with sound and see if the monitor speakers are working. If not, they might be muted. The Output Devices tab has a mute button, but there is also another place to check. Again in the terminal, type alsamixer and the page that opens I think will be your GF108 card. If not, press F6 to select it. Muted columns will have MM at the bottom. Use the arrow keys to select columns, the m key to toggle mute, and the up/down arrows to increase/decrease volume.

Hope that gets us part way done.

At this time I have installed the Pulse Audio but I also moved my PC back out to the main room and plugged it into the speakers. It is working perfectly there. Tomorrow I will try unplugging the speakers and see if I can get the monitor working. When I installed the Pulse Audio it did see the monitor and it showed that it was hooked up and working but at that time I did not have anything to play on it and I got side tracked.

Gotcha.

For some, just the act of installing pavucontrol has fixed their "issues" and we can hope that is the case for you.

If you still have any problems, you know where to find us.

Good luck.
