Linux Replacement for MusicBee?

Post by NevyNeverKnowsBest »

I am very keen on MusicBee for Windows. A major problem I have is that MusicBee is not ported to Linux. What is a great media player similar to it? I imagine Linux's best media player likely struggles to compete, but what the users here listening to their music with?

After searching around some, Clementine has the most user satisfaction I've found. I am toying with it now. It still just doesn't feel like home, though. MusicBee is still home.

Actually, I'm going a different route with this.

I'm sure if I play around with this more, I can very likely get MusicBee running within Wine. Tonight isn't the night, though, and I may venture into Clementine or Banshee.

While it may run on wine or playonlinux or other programs all of which are just front ends for WIne, WIne is actually pretty unrteliable. You just never know when a seemingly innocuous update will break it. So I'd try some native Linux music players.

Yes, Clementine is very good. I use both it and Audacious for playing tunes. There is no shortage of decent Linux music players, you doon't need 3rd party software sources.

I tried running the "portable" version of musicbee and it said I needed ".NET Framework v4.0" ...

FWIW, I run foobar200 in wine; it works great and has done so for years with various versions of wine and it's a lot better than any linux player.

HI NevyNeverKnowsBest,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

There are many excellent music manager players available to install and use that work in Linux without using the Linux Wine system. And, you can have as many music-related applications installed as you want on your system. There are also many posts on this in this forum.

For a light on system resources music application, I would recommend Audacious which can also use WinAmp skins. My favorite is still Amarok, but I have many music applications installed.

Truth be told, I'm debating on switching back to Windows 10. MusicBee is so much better than any thing Linux has, not to mention superior drivers for all hardware. I feel like Mint, Ubuntu, and all desktop distros are heavily under-developed compared to Windows.

Windows is, however, so inferior about protecting privacy, and its all that keeps me on Linux Mint.

If you can't live without MusicBee (& it does look a neat program) then my best suggestion would be to load Windows 7 in a virtualbox machine & then run VirtualBox in FireJail.
That way you have the nest of both worlds - as long as you have the CPU & RAM to cope, & if you were using Windows 10, then it is probable that you do..

You should look at Lollypop. Maybe it's similar to Musicbee? Maybe you've already seen it, it appears to be in both lists phd21 linked to I just noticed. https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Lollypop
I just went back to using QMMP myself after giving Rhythmbox a good try for a few months. Seems Rhythmbox was acting quite glitchy for me lately. I prefer the Winamp style players myself with dozens of skins to choose from. QMMP just released a new version today as a matter of fact.. http://qmmp.ylsoftware.com/

Clementine is decent but i use a fork of it called Strawberry Music Player:

As someone who has just moved to linux mint from windows and who used J River i am more than happy with Strawberry.

What is so special about MusicBee? I just had a brief look at the website and can see no real advantage to it over any other player out there. TIme was when you put a record on the player and listened to the music. Surely that is the primary intent of any music player out there? FWIW I use VLC on occasion or whatever is the flavour of the day for the particular distro I am running.

I have always used Winamp in Windows.
I wish that would work in Linux, but development seems to have ended on it.

Hi chunky70, NevyNeverKnowsBest, etc...

I never heard of the Strawberry Music Player (a "fork" of Clementine) until your reply to this post. I installed it and it seems really nice, but I do not immediately see the advantages over Clementine which has more options.

To NevyNeverKnowsBest: like "lsemmens" said, "What's so special about MusicBee?" I took a look at MusicBee and I do not see why you could not use one of the many excellent Linux and or cross-platform music applications. I would highly recommend that you install some of the Linux music applications and try them. You can have many music applications installed and just remove the ones you do not want.

"Audacious" and "Qmmp" are skinnable like WinAmp (can use some WinAmp skins).

"River Media Center" (jRiver) seems nice too but is a paid for Linux application; free trial usage. Looks like it also has a built-in UPnP/DLNA streaming server? This plays videos as well, so it is a multimedia or media player.

There are also Linux media players that play music and videos like VLC (installed), SMplayer, etc...

Another vote here for audacious which with its relatively minimal GUI, (I use the default GUI, not the winamp version) does exactly what I need, ie, it plays music directly or in playlist form extremely well and does not get in the way with lots of bells and whistles that I'll never use.
