No audio sessions randomly

Post by macbeto »

Hi all,
I have a laptop Xiaomi Notebook Pro with Linux Mint R.19.1 installed. From the last 5 months I have been using Linux Mint as my only OS and from the beginning the laptop is suffering no audio sessions (from the booting) like the 25% times. When I start the computer and there is not the beginning chimes then the laptop will have no audio whatever I do, so I shutdown and start again and the most of the times I get the audio back.
I have reinstall Linux Mint from scrach several times (from R 19 to R 19.1) but always with the same issue. Firstly I thought the problem was with the TLP battery app, but after reinstalling without that program the issues go on.
I have installed Pulseaudio but when I have the issue I have the same options selected than when I have not. Same with alsamixer, during the issue the pipes are filled like showing there is audio, but is not.
Here is the information of my system:

I have been trying all the commands I have seen in forums like pulseaudio -k, but so far without luck, I only recover the audio rebooting and I don't know the reason of this issue.
I will appreciate if someone can give me a clue of what's is going on.
Many thanks

Re: No audio sessions randomly

Post by MrEen »

Hi macbeto.

The next time there is no sound, run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and paste back any output you receive. If there's is no output, try pulseaudio -vvv and wait a few minutes as it generates a lot of messages. Use Ctlt-C to stop the output and get back to a prompt, then paste the output here.

Also, does aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav generate any error messages when this happens?

Thanks you for the answer in this weird issue.
During the last time it happened to the computer I did a pulseaudio -k among some other commands, but I didn't regain the audio.
I didn't happen again lately, but the next time I will test your commands.

Furthermore, after rebooting I recovered the audio and I did the same commands with exactly the same results.

This may very well be the reason for your issue:

Code: Select all

E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permiso denegado
Run this in the terminal to retake ownership of all your files:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -Rc $USER:$USER $HOME
Ahh, correction; I just saw you used sudo. Well, the above command is fine to run even if it's not needed.

See if deleting the files in /home/lixbeto/.config/pulse then running pulseaudio -k in the terminal, without sudo, stops this from happening. Or at least makes it happen less frequently.

MrEen, thank you for your time.
Yes, I was using a sudo and the response was I had no permissions. Without sudo, just pulseaudio -k there is no response, only the prompt.
I will try the next time your approach.
I am really loosing hope on this isuue, beacuse when it happens aparently nothing wrong is happening, I didn't notice any changes in logs from when is playing ok. For me it makes no sense and I can't see what is causing it.

Re: No audio sessions randomly

Post by MrEen »

I am hoping the last instruction is going to work. Chances are pulseaudio's config is getting messed up, and deleting them will cause a fresh set to replace them. When you issue pulseaudio -k, what quietly happens is the sound daemon is killed, then should restart automatically and load the new config files. It is normal to just be returned to the prompt. Why the files might be getting messed up I can't really answer, but it happens to a lot of people on occasion.

Actually, the next time it happens, run dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel' in the terminal and paste the results back here. Maybe that'll help us figure out the why. Run that now with working sound so we have something to compare with versus non working. Save the output to a text file and paste back both the next time it happens.

Good luck.

One more thing worth trying the next time it happens. See if putting the system to sleep then waking it back up restores the sound. I know it's not really a fix, but it might help figure out what's going wrong.

Another idea. When it is not working run pacmd list-sinks again, but do so while a song or video is playing. That will help to see what pulseaudio "thinks" it is playing to.

I don't know how I missed it before, but I just found your original thread about this issue. I'm wondering if Auto-Mute might be causing the issue. I'll wait to see what happens with the above steps before suggesting turning that off.

You're quite welcome, macbeto.

There's no rush, and the longer it goes before happening again, the better, right?

I do think we'll get it figured out if it does happen.

Here's the order I'd like you to do if/when it happens:
1. Run dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel' in the terminal so we can see possible errors.
2. Start a song or video then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal so we can see where pulseaudio things it's playing to.
3. Delete the files in /home/lixbeto/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal to see if that restores the sound. You'll also need to restart your browser or player after that.
4. Just to eliminate the browser or player being the cause/issue, try running aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav in the terminal.

Even if the above still requires a reboot, the info from those commands should help us determine the cause, which should lead to a solution.

Hi MrEen,
Whatever I do when is not working doesn't recover the audio, except a reboot (and not always, sometimes I have to do it several times).
Here is the info when it happened this morning:

Again it looks like pretty much the same to me (except latency with some small difference).

3.I deleted the files in folder /home/lixbeto/.config/pulse and then I did a pulseaudio -k, which created again the folders. But after it I didn't recover the audio.
4. Te audio file /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav is not played when I have no audio, and no issues listening "Front Center" when is working.

This is really a nightmare, no clue or evidence of bad working except the fact that I have no audio. It happens mostly when the laptop is not connected to the power, and I am running LTP as the battery saver, but I disabled all the LTP options related with the audio but without success. I also reinstalled Linux Mint from 0 without LTP during months and the issue happened, so I don't related it to TLP.
Sorry, I didn't suspend the computer and come alive when it happened, so I couldn't check if it recovered the audio.
I am really ashame of expending your time with it, but I have no idea what to do to solve it.
Thanks a lot.

Okay. Those outputs do indeed look pretty much the same and no evidence of your issue. This might be a good thing.

I found a thread here with the same notebook that has an Accepted Answer of checking alsamixer. I know you already looked at alsamixer, but the next time it happens, look very carefully. Do any columns have MM at the bottom? The MM indicates that column is muted. Unfortunately, alsamixer somehow shows some mutes while pavucontrol and built-in sound apps don't.

The Master and PCM columns should not be muted. While Headphones and Speakers should have one muted and the other not muted, depending on how you're trying to listen.

If you do spot MM at the bottom of any columns that shouldn't be muted, use your arrow keys to highlight the column then press the m key to unmute it. Then the sound should return.

I am hoping this solves your issue. If it indeed works, I can give you a quick terminal command for restoring sound in the future so you don't have to keep opening alsamixer. However, I can't give you a good reason that this happens.

If nothing is muted in alsamixer, try this in the terminal the next time: sudo alsa force-reload
I am really ashame of expending your time with it, but I have no idea what to do to solve it.
Please don't worry about that. I choose to be here to (try to) help people. I cannot afford to contribute financially to the Mint project, so this is how I "pay" for this excellent OS. And I actually enjoy doing this, 99% of the time.

Mr Een, it's really kind of you your explanation and it is a luxury for us that you can take the time and share your knowledge between those than don't have it, like me.
I installed alsamixer sometime ago and I checked it for a while because people recommended it at forums. So I only have MM at the Headset column (and S/PDIF but without the pipe to change the values). I have the same parameters when works and when not.
I will try a sudo alsa force-reload, but I believe I already did it before without success.
As I told this is not normal at all, the one with the same laptop did not have audio permamently, but have it the most of the times and only sometimes you have no audio is pretty weird, I haven't read about it elsewhere, but I don't believe I am the only one with this issue, after reinstalling several times the OS.
Thanks

Understood.

Sometimes, things just happen that can't be explained (without a ton of testing) and I realize it can be quite frustrating.

A total guess on my part is some sort of race condition when booting is causing the issue. What that means is something isn't yet loaded that something else is looking for.

Here's something else that may work, but based on your outputs, I'm not terribly confident as you're showing everything as set up correctly when it's not working as far as I can tell:
While everything is working properly run sudo alsactl store in the terminal. Then the next time it fails, see if sudo alsactl restore brings it back.

If we still don't have it solved after trying everything above, we'll see if differences in the output of alsa-info.sh help any. I'll explain what to do if/when we get to that point.

Hello MrEen,
I did a sudo alsa force-reload and didn't solve the problem:

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-soc-skl snd-soc-skl-ipc snd-hda-ext-core snd-soc-sst-dsp snd-soc-sst-ipc snd-soc-acpi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-soc-core snd-compress snd-pcm-dmaengine snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer (failed: modules still loaded: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-timer).
Loading ALSA sound driver modules: snd-hda-codec-hdmi snd-soc-skl snd-soc-skl-ipc snd-hda-ext-core snd-soc-sst-dsp snd-soc-sst-ipc snd-soc-acpi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-soc-core snd-compress snd-pcm-dmaengine snd-hda-intel snd-hda-codec snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-seq-midi snd-seq-midi-event snd-rawmidi snd-seq snd-seq-device snd-timer.
Also the command sudo alsactl store / sudo alsactl restore didn't recover the sound.
Just suspending the session and login again solve the problem, so I don't need apparently to reboot the laptop.
I think the same as you, from the beginning I thought it was a problem related to the order the booting is executing the orders and services, but I don't know exactly what to see to probe it.
If a suspend/resume of the session solves the problem for me means that is not related to mute or low volumen or any key I should press during the boot, because I don't change any parameter up to the resume.
Besides my session is starting after the boot without type the user / password, I have it configured to boot the session automatically (my laptop is only at home so I prefer not to type the user / password everytime I boot the laptop).
Does it ring any bell to you??
Thanks

It's good that you discovered that a suspend/resume fixes the issue. I understand that it's not something you want to have to do every once in a while just to get sound working. I've pretty much only got 2 things still worth trying.

1. After I looked over everything again, I realize that it might be good for you to run the 4.18 kernel. That might solve the problem. To upgrade to it, in the Update Manager click on View > Linux kernels. In the left pane click on 4.18, then select the highest kernel in the right pane and click install. Finish with a reboot.

2. If you still get the issue, follow the instruction on this page to run the alsa info script. Save the file it creates, or the URL it generates, then when you get working sound, run just the last part again bash alsa-info.sh and we'll compare the 2 outputs. It might be module that isn't loaded that would be easy to fix, but we'll have to wait and see.

If suspending/resuming gets back the audio at least is not the worst scenario, but if I could have it working properly will be fantastic.
1. In my Update Manager the latest kernel version I can install is the one I have (4.15.0-47), it doesn't show the kernel 4.18. Besides, the one I am using it says "not supported" although I downloaded it from the Update Manager.
2. I have downloades the alsa-info script and saved the info. I will compare it as long as it happens again.
Many thanks for all your support MrEEn!!!!!!!!!

I found the kernel 4.18 and installed it, but it speed up my fans without any program opened when usually they are not running in low workflows, so I came back to the kernel 4.15 via Timeshift, I can't stand with fans working all the time, so for now I prefer not to install that kernel version.
