can't get the laptop internal mic working

Post by dencass »

Hi All
I just installed LinuxMint19 64 bit on my laptop together with the updates and cannot get the internal mic to work. It worked OK 3 years ago on an earlier Mint version together with Alsamixer.
Now Alsamixer starts and displays only this information:
┌────────────────────────────── AlsaMixer v1.1.3 ──────────────────────────────┐
│ Card: HDA ATI HDMI F1: Help │
│ Chip: ATI R6xx HDMI F2: System information │
│ View: F3:[Playback] F4: Capture F5: All F6: Select sound card │

│ ┌──┐ │

Alsamixer graphical mixer console display is missing.
Sound is OK when videos play back, but the internal mic won't work on "hangouts"
Here's the output of
inxi -Fxz
( sorry - it's rather long )

I installed Alsa-utils but still can't get the Alsamixer graphical mixer screen to start, although it worked OK on this laptop 3 years ago. I've searched around for help but can't find any posts with the same Alsamixer mixer screen fault.
The Sound Settings/Input?Device shows the Internal Microphone Device highlighted, but the device settings selection box below shows the Input Level at below 10% and there's no graphical button to change it, unlike the Volume slider above it
This is my first post and I tried to include only pertinent clues.
Lemme know if it's too wordy and I'll keep the next trimmed down.
Thanks for your time and
cheers,
Denis

Hi Denis, and welcome to the forum.

My apologies for missing your post before now.

When you open alsamixer, it's defaulting to your HDMI audio. You need to press F6 to change to the built-in sound card. It might say FCH Azalia, or Generic. Once you've done that, You can increase the mic levels there, and make sure it's not muted. Muted will show MM at the bottom of the column instead of 00. To unmute, select the column then press the m key.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help Mr Een.
I just tried your F6 suggestion and Alsamixer is working the way it did before.
