[SOLVED] No sound through display port output

Post by deivid »

Hi!

I bought a new monitor with 4K and all that cool stuff, but I can't get it to play any sound, I can see the HDMI device in the sound configuration, but when I select it, everything goes mute. If I select the "internal card", sounds comes from my laptop. Also through `pavucontrol` it shows many hdmi 2/3 devices, but none of them work.

My laptop is Hp EliteBook 8460p, and the monitor is AOC, U2879VF.

The output of aplay -l is

Code: Select all

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: 92HD81B1X5 Analog [92HD81B1X5 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
The output of inxi -Fxz is

Hi deivid.

Just want to be sure you're aware that monitor doesn't have speakers. There is a sound card onboard that drives a headphones/aux jack. Do you have something plugged into that jack? If yes, start a song or video while trying to get sound out of that then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. Paste the output that gives, along with the output of pacmd list-cards in you next reply.

Good luck.

P.S. I am basing my assumptions on this: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-U2879VF-Moni ... B0163JLIWU

Oh my god, I'm so embarrased, I assumed the monitor had internal speakers! I plugged my headphones into the aux jack and it works great.

I'm sorry for the false notice and thanks so much for your help!

No worries. At least it was turned on, right? Everyone is entitled to one of those moments! Glad it's sorted out. :D
