No sound on fresh 19.3 install cinnamon

Post by lcb123 »

Hello,
New HP Envy desktop all-in-one, installed with 19.3 cinnamon. Only trying to hear sound out speakers; although there is a combo headphone/mic jack (per setup) I do not have a device that works in that jack.
I've searched through the suggestions and tried looking at everything I read so far.
Ran alsamixer and ensured the auto-mute is disabled.
I know the speakers are functional because when I first powered up, I heard the Microsoft install helper voice, then I aborted that, rebooted from the USB drive and installed mint.

Just for reference, the pavucontrol shows the output "fluttering" from the firefox audio stream as if there is music playing.
Thx.

Hi lcb123,

Do you still have Windows on the machine? If so, boot to it and ensure Fast Startup is Off. Then power down, don't reboot. Wait a minute or two then power up into Mint and test the sound.

Windows often causes issues like this by not powering down an amp when rebooting resulting in your speakers not being available:

Code: Select all

analog-output-speaker: Speakers (priority 10000, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)

No, sorry, I was unclear. I overwrote the windows install completely.
Thank you for the reply, any idea how I could repair it from linux at this point?

For starters, try a full shutdown. Wait a few minutes before powering back up then test the sound.

If that doesn't help, try reinstalling the sound base with this:

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-utils pulseaudio linux-sound-base libasound2
Reboot then test again.

If still no luck, run this command and paste back the URL it gives on the final line:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999

I tried all the steps you suggested; still no luck. Here's the resulting URL:

Okay, a couple of suggestions.

1. In the terminal run alsamixer and raise the Headphone volume using the arrow keys to navigate and change levels. See if sound starts coming out of your speakers.

2. Try this tweak to your settings:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel model=alc274-dell-aio'
I know you're not using a Dell, but it's the same codec and is also an AIO, so it may contain the fix you need. Reboot once done then test.

Re: No sound on fresh 19.3 install cinnamon

Nope.

1: had no effect
2: No sounds yet, but the alsamixer setup has more options. I tried raising the headphone volume as well, and also tried all 3 options on the <Auto-Mute> (Line Out+Speaker, Speaker Only, and Disabled).

Again, thank you very much and if you can think of anything else I am game to try.

Your output was almost perfect, so I'm a bit surprised there much of an issue.

Play a song or video and run pacmd list-sinks again. Just want to confirm the speaker still shows unavailable.

See if you have any sound settings in your BIOS. If so, they'll probably be enabled already, so disable for one boot then enable them again on the next boot. Some were able to change the BIOS from HDAudio to AC97 and that fixed them.

You may need to remove that edit we made for this to work: sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-fix.conf

OK; will do. I previously looked in the BIOS but didn't see anything that looked like a sound setting. Might have missed it.
Thanks; I'll back out the change and then look again. Back in a bit. Much appreciated!

I do not see any sound settings in the BIOS. I ran a system check option available and noted that "Audio" was ok. At least the low-level connection is happy.
Surprised there isn't much BIOS detail available.

OK; don't work too hard and thanks again; I really appreciate your help!

Any chance this makes sound come out of the speakers: aplay -D hw:0,0 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

No, but is this because I didn't reset the previous alsa fix? Got:

Code: Select all

aplay: set_params:1305: Channels count non available

No. I've had trouble getting rid of that error at times. Try aplay -D hw:0,0 --channels=2 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Figures!

Here's a new way to try:

In the terminal enter pacmd load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,0 then see if your sound settings have a new device to play sound from. A reboot will clear that, but if it works, we can make it permanent.

Yes, have new device but it doesn't play test sounds. If I switch the setting to that new device, you tube stops. Test sounds do not play (on either device).
