It's my automatically started pulseaudio:

Code: Select all

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
[sudo] password for lcb:
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  lcb        9635 F.... pulseaudio

Okay, try killall pulseaudio then check the fuser command again.

You did remove the semicolon at the front of the line, didn't you? From here.

Yep, removed the semicolon comment at beginning of the line:

Code: Select all

grep auto /etc/pulse/client.conf
; autospawn = yes
autospawn = no
; auto-connect-localhost = no
; auto-connect-display = no

HEre's the results of the killall/fuser:

Code: Select all

killall pulseaudio ; !sudo
killall pulseaudio ; sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
[sudo] password for lcb:
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  lcb        9959 F.... pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0c:   lcb        9959 F...m pulseaudio
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   lcb        9959 F...m pulseaudio

Delete the line that has yes. That file can be finicky with those comments which indicates the default behavior.

Code: Select all

$ ps -C pulseaudio ; killall pulseaudio ; ps -C pulseaudio
    PID TTY          TIME CMD
  10104 ?        00:00:00 pulseaudio
    PID TTY          TIME CMD
  10104 ?        00:00:00 pulseaudio
sudo?

Code: Select all

ps -C pulseaudio ; sudo killall pulseaudio ; sleep 3 ; ps -C pulseaudio
    PID TTY          TIME CMD
  10159 ?        00:00:00 pulseaudio
    PID TTY          TIME CMD
  10170 ?        00:00:00 pulseaudio
It refuses to go away ... systemctl restarting it? Nope, not directly anyway. Maybe something else is:

Code: Select all

# systemctl status pulseaudio.service
Unit pulseaudio.service could not be found.
root@bigun:/home/lcb# systemctl status | grep pulse
           │   │ ├─pulseaudio.service
           │   │ │ └─10170 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no --log-target=journal
           │   │ │   │ └─10179 grep --color=auto pulse
Are we killing the server or the local client?

Sorry, I also deleted the line:

grep auto /etc/pulse/client.conf ; sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
autospawn = no

                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND

The only thing I can think of here is do you you have a client.conf in /home/lcb/.config/pulse?

And have you tried a reboot?

After reboot.
Still not stopping with the "-k" option; still restarting:

Code: Select all

$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
[sudo] password for lcb:
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  lcb        1235 F.... pulseaudio
lcb@bigun:~$ grep autospawn /etc/pulse/client.conf
autospawn = no
lcb@bigun:~$ pulseaudio -k ; !sudo
pulseaudio -k ; sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  lcb        1235 F.... pulseaudio
lcb@bigun:~$ killall pulseaudio ; !sudo
killall pulseaudio ; sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND

I guess we're going to need to get serious with that sucker. Run these one line at a time:

Code: Select all

systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service

Serious works for stopping the pulseaudio service.
Now I'm retrying the settings in the jack retasking...so far no luck but at least the reconfig is taking.

MrEen,
Now I'm re-reading the other posts and retrying the settings with the jack retask.
Funny, now with say only retasking pin 0x14, and with some different options, when look at the "Sound" settings there are "Surround 4.0 Output" as well as "Surround 2.1 Output", and when I try the "Test Sound" button, accordant speakers are shown (including subwoofer), however no sound yet. Much experimentation to follow.

I'm just hoping all the experimenting leads to a successful resolution.

It is still possible there an amp that's not turned on. But getting those surround sound options is certainly a step in the right direction.

We're into territory where all I can do is suggest things that are mostly just guesses.

One thing that might help is to look at cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 with the reconfiguration. For example, has 0x14 changed it's pin-ctls value from 0x00 to 0x40:
Node 0x14 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058d: Stereo Amp-Out
Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x00, stepsize=0x00, mute=1
Amp-Out vals: [0x80 0x80]
Pincap 0x00010010: OUT EAPD
EAPD 0x2: EAPD
Pin Default 0x411111f0: [N/A] Speaker at Ext Rear
Conn = 1/8, Color = Black
DefAssociation = 0xf, Sequence = 0x0
Misc = NO_PRESENCE
Pin-ctls: 0x00:
Unsolicited: tag=00, enabled=0
Power states: D0 D1 D2 D3 EPSS
Power: setting=D0, actual=D0
Connection: 1
0x02
If not, you might want to then try sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x14 SET_PIN_WIDGET_CONTROL 0x40

Only get into this territory once you've exhausted the other.

Almost forgot to mention. If we get to the point you're ready to try pulseaudio, you'll need to run these now:

Code: Select all

systemctl --user start pulseaudio.socket
systemctl --user start pulseaudio.service

After the first time stopping with the systemctl commands, thereafter

Code: Select all

pulseaudio --start
and

Code: Select all

pulseaudio -k
seemed to work. However, maybe they aren't starting it the right way?

Thanks for the other info, will check it out later today!

I have a hunch it is because the amp isn't turned on, but I do not know how to check that. I think if I could figure out if it isn't enabled, and could enable it, I'd be very close.
Also, once I fiddle with the jack retask settings, I see those surround options go away. Also, in pavucontrol, the sound bars indicating when the "test" sound is run from the gnome sound panel also go away. So at that point I think maybe I'm not going in the correct direction?

There used to be another tool called hda_analyzer.py, but it was written in python2 and was a pain in the arse to get anywhere with it due to lack of instructions. It would probably come in really handy right now. I believe it could figure out the amp situation.

We're at the point where I'm pretty much useless to you now. For all I know, we're actually chasing the wrong thing. It could be a GPIO issue that's holding us back, but I just can't be sure. It might even be the Pin Default for one of the pins is wrong. Those I know how to change, but have no idea what they should be.

Did we ever try a 5.7 or 5.8 kernel? It's mildly possible that could work.

I agree, you have REALLY tried and given me so much to look for.
Don't worry about this any more; I'll keep at it and one day will stumble on the right answer. At that point, I'll let you know for sure.

Thanks again for ALL the hard work and great suggestions! I really appreciate your help and advice!
