Re: No sound on fresh 19.3 install cinnamon

Post by lcb123 »

OK; did that and no sound. One question - I've tried many of the "Profile" options in pavucontrol and have it set to "Analog Stereo Output", although at each iteration I try to test some of the HDMI options that don't say "Unplugged" also. Is that what you'd expect I would use? BTW, I promise my hearing is working...

LOL. The proper setting for you is Analog Stereo Duplex, where it's been for your curl outputs.

If HDAJackRetask doesn't help us solve this, I have an idea to change that Profile and use the hw:0,0 idea and combine sinks, but we'll wait on that.

One more tip with HDAJackRetask when the pin changing doesn't help is to check the box for Parser hints and try changing some of the defaults to On or Yes.

A few I would suggest trying are inv_eapd, pin_amp_workaround, single_adc_amp and need_dac_fix.

Do these one at a time, if they don't work, undo the change then try the next one. You change them by double clicking on them. And remember to keep hitting Apply now before each sound test.

I think I tried every permutation and test; no joy.
I even went into the BIOS and enabled legacy mode for a bit to see if that had anything to do with it.
So frustrating; I really appreciate your excellent advice, but so far it's tougher than we are.

Before we do anything else, run the Live version you used to install Mint with and test the sound there. If it works, run sudo alsactl store followed by cat /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and paste that output. Then we can copy it into your installed OS and it should work.

I keep thinking it has something to do with an amp not being set. This link https://askubuntu.com/questions/899021/ ... hp-laptops
This post:

Code: Select all

Override pin 0x14 and set it to Internal Speaker (LFE). I believe this enables the amplifier that drives the top speakers. Setting it to something other than just "Internal Speaker" is important, so that pulseaudio does not try to redirect sound to that channel.

Override pin 0x1e and set them to "Internal Speaker".

Seems like something similar. Although a desktop, the speakers are B&O . Just trying to think out of the box a little.

Sorry, leapfrogged a reply.
I already did that (the live version of 19.3), as well as tried the latest Fedora in case.

I even tried 18.3 but it wouldn't boot.

Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that other thread idea. Are some of the not connected pins you have able to be set to the (LFE) option? If so, do try it!

And this means leaving the original as is, still connected. You're adding the (LFE) to the mix.

Yes, but that didn't change anything. I'm rebooting to get back to a baseline, without the alsa-fix module enabled, etc.

I had another thread I was helping in that went on for ages on something very similar. I'll try to find it as it may remind me of something I've missed here.

Here's the last page of the thread: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=312318

That very post is worth trying if it's possible. Change the 0x17 to LFE and 0x21 to Internal Speaker if it's possible.

Also, you can check the box for Advanced override and try changing the Channel (in group) to other options may help.

No joy. Just to try it, I plugged in some old USB speakers which work well enough for now. They show up in the pavucontrol.
I would really love to hear the awesome B&O speakers though.

I hear ya! I can say, they've been troublesome on Linux for a while I know to get working properly. Do you know if there are 4 speakers in there? That's what I've usually seen for the B&O speakers so far.

I'm not really sure, but I think so. The specs don't tell me, but I see plenty of "B&O quad speaker" descriptions.
I'll keep digging here and there as time permits, and I TRULY appreciate your very dogged and continued help.
Must be as frustrating for you as for me; which means you need a break. :)

Hehe. I hate quitting when things aren't solved. I found another thread similar that didn't end well: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=304372&p=1706841

That system had a different audio codec than you have. And was on a much older kernel.

Let's try my other idea and see if it leads us anywhere, although I'm not really hopeful.

In pavucontrol select anything with HDMI on the Configuration tab, then in /etc/pulse/default.pa right after the .fail just below the comment block add this:

Code: Select all

### Load analog device
load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,0
load-module module-combine-sink sink_name=combined
set-default-sink combined
Save the file then run pulseaudio -k. Now on the Output Devices tab of pavucontrol select the Simultaneous output or something similar and test your sound.

Nope; is just shows the Built-in Audio, with output slider moving and on the "simultaneous output to Built-in Audio", no output slider. No sound.
Hey it was worth the effort.
I'm going to have to take off for a while.
If you think of anything, I'd be grateful and happy to try.
Like you, I hate to give up. I can get by for a bit but I'll keep digging and trying stuff next week. If I stumble on anything, I'll post back and will check periodically.
Thanks again for your time and suggestions; I think we are not looking in the right place somehow.
