Stuttering Sound

Post by BarryX »

I recently bought a new PC from Novatech: Novatech Life NTA311 - AMD Athlon 3000G - 8GB DDR4 2400Mhz Memory - 240GB SSD

I ordered it without an OS and installed the latest edition of Suse Leap only to find that the sound stuttered on both the optical drive (when playing music) and on YouTube, when playing either music or videos. I posted a question as to why this was happening on the OpenSuse forum but received no replies.

Given it was a new computer, I thought I would try Linux Mint and have just installed the latest version of MATE, which I like very much. However, the stuttering is still there :-(

I know that certain hardware doesn't work that well with Linux, although I have successfully used older versions of Suse with other Novatech PCs.

So, my question is twofold:

1. Is it likely that the problem I am experiencing is down to a problem with the hardware?

2. Are there any changes that anyone would recommend I could make to the PC to eliminate the stuttering?

Hi BarryX, and welcome to the forum.

The first thing to try is this:
If you're experiencing glitches, skips, pops or crackling in your audio playback, it's quite possibly caused by the timer-based scheduling pulseaudio now uses. Disable timer-based scheduling this way:
Users of 18.3 and earlier versions of Mint type this in the terminal: gksudo xed /etc/pulse/default.pa
Users of 19 and later versions of Mint type this in the terminal: xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa
Find the line that says load-module module-udev-detect and change it to load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
Save the file, then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and test your sound

Many thanks for the feedback.

I did as you suggested, typing the code into the terminal and hitting the "save" button in the terminal menu.

I then ran "pulseaudio -k" and hit "return".

When I initially tried the audio, I thought the problem had been solved, with just a slight skip on a YouTube music track and nothing on a track played on the optical drive. However, when I repeated the plays, there were notable skips on both online and optical drive tracks.

Did I follow your instructions correctly?

I also found another thread in the forum suggesting this is a major problem and possibly receiving attention from the developers. I don't want to take up any more of your time than you can afford to give, so if it is a question of waiting, I can live with the skipping and stuttering until a fix is found.

Do please advise on what you think is the next best action.

Since the stuttering is a problem on both Suse and Mint, I'm guessing this is a major headache for everyone:-(

However, I do like Mint and intend to permanently switch over; with the caveat that the sound issue must eventually be fixed, which I hope it will be.

All your efforts are much appreciated by a relative novice like me.

I'm going to take a look at your sound settings. This way I can see that you made the change properly, and also look for other possibilities as the cause of your issue. Run this command and paste the output:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line will have a URL pointing to the info.

I am posting this in two parts, given the size of the information involved.

Code: Select all

Okay, the addition was done correctly. We can leave it be for now, as it shouldn't cause any difficulty moving forward.

It appears you're using the Line Out port for listening. Assuming that's true, see if disabling the HDMI sound card has any effect on this. Install (if necessary) and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) and make the change on the Configuration tab from Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output to Off

Also, you are affected by an issue with PulseAudio I believe as evidenced by this:

Code: Select all

	Profiles:
input:analog-stereo: Analogue Stereo Input (sinks: 0, sources: 1, priority: 65, available: no)
output:analog-stereo: Analogue Stereo Output (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 6500, available: yes)
output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Analogue Stereo Duplex (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 6565, available: no)
output:iec958-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 5500, available: yes)
output:iec958-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analogue Stereo Input (sinks: 1, sources: 1, priority: 5565, available: no)
off: Off (sinks: 0, sources: 0, priority: 0, available: yes)
Those available: no are what I'm referring to. There is progress on this front, and will hopefully be addressed by an update in the near future. I have no idea if this is having any impact on your issue, but it might be.

Sadly, despite having made the change as per your suggestion, I have seen no real difference in stuttering over the past couple of days, so I think we must assume that the fix hasn't worked :-(

Have you any other ideas, or should we wait on the developers?

It's probably not related, but another oddity of this computer is that I am seeing random lags in mouse commands being realised, too.

For example, every morning, as part of my work, I review newspapers and use "Save As" to store certain articles for future reference.

During the "save" period, the mouse is often inactive for a couple of seconds, which hasn't been my experience with other computers when undertaking the same commands when running Suse Leap as the OS.

Could this be a RAM issue or something similar? Would that impact negatively on the sound?

My REAL worry in all of this is that the problem could be with the computer and not with the OS/pulseaudio, since the computer is brand new. Novatech equipment is good but their technical people have ZERO knowledge of Linux. Do both Suse Leap and Linux Mint, for example, use pulseaudio (I believe they do)? Both OS have had stuttering problems on this computer, although an older version of Leap didn't have this problem on an older computer I run.

If you had to guess, would you think the problem is with the hardware or software? I'm still thinking the latter...

Maybe a kernel 5.7 will help, but it is not supported by Mint!

We can rule out the issue present in pulseaudio by making a Live ISO of a 19.3 version of Mint and testing on there. That's assuming your "latest version of MATE" is actually the 20 release.

Also, if you've installed any power management apps such as TLP, that could be causing the issue (both mouse and sound), and at least with Cinnamon, I've seen issues caused by CPU monitoring desklets or whatever they're called.

Confirmed. I've seen these things drag the system to a crawl and ramp up the CPU temps. I uninstalled the offending program and now exclusively rely on Terminal command sensors.

I can't exactly remember what the application was, something that sat in the panel to keep an eye on temperatures etc..

Hi MrEen,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, but life keeps getting in the way...

Anyway, first up, I haven't added any power management apps or anything remotely like that. My installed Mint 20 MATE is plain vanilla.

Today, I did as you suggested and made a live ISO version of Mint 19.3 using Etcher.

I have good news and bad news...

The good is that while running the computer from the live version there is no stuttering at all on the optical drive. From a limited batch of CDs, I had no stuttering at all. The bad is that playing any music at all on YouTube results in the same stuttering of both sound and picture.

Just to check I wasn't going mad, I played the same CD on both the live version of 19.3 and then the installed version of 20; it was smooth on the first and stuttered slightly on the latter.

On both live 19.3 and installed 20 Pretty Vacant by the Pistols on YouTube both visually and audibly stuttered simultaneously.

I have also ruled out the external speakers I have plugged in too; I listened to music directly off the CPU and the stuttering was still there.

What do you make of that?

Okay, some progress.

It sounds to me like the video driver in use might be adding to the mayhem. Or possibly hardware acceleration or lack thereof.

Let's get a look at the system with the output of inxi -Fxz please. And which browser are you using for Youtube vids?

(Note to self: Next answer should probably be this: viewtopic.php?p=1752180#p1752180)

Okay, I'm not a graphics expert, but that output looked fine as far as I could tell. The mouse lag you referred to does make me suspect graphics still, but let's see if we can at least get the sound part of this working well.

Go to the link in my last post and follow the steps there. Then reboot and test the sound and see if there's any difference.

Sadly, there wasn't any improvement.

I just wanted to check I did it OK. I put in the two lines of script you suggested, both of which required a password. A new "page" opened into which I copied and pasted the large amount of script and pressed save in the menu.

Subjectively, the type of stutter appeared to change a bit; less harsh. But that may have been purely subjective and not necessarily the case.

I think the mouse problem might have been a red herring. I gave it a wack and it appears to be working correctly.

I did go back and re-check to see whether the ISO live version of Mint 19.3 was still performing properly from the optical drive and indeed it was. YouTube continued to stutter as before.

Any other suggestions gratefully accepted.

You did everything right assuming you rebooted afterwards. And I know that you have since done so at least to test the ISO.

I'm going to suggest something I normally wouldn't do at this point. But you outputs showing the Raven audio makes me want to try it.

Go here and follow the procedure to install a 5.8 kernel. Reboot when done, and test the sound. Also look at your sound settings, as they may have changed some.

If the 5.8 kernel messes up your system, you can always use the Advanced options in the grub menu to boot to the 5.4 kernel, then uninstall the 5.8 kernel.
