Downloading "tricky" videos

Post by Halvor_Raknes »

I don't have Internet at home, so when I get online, I usually download a whole bunch of videos from YouTube and other places to watch them later offline. Usually this is a breeze with the browser extensions I have installed. But then there are some videos, a few on YouTube but on some sites it applies to all videos that can be streamed there, that the extensions won't download.

Do people have some suggestions for ways to capture or download any video which streams?

PS. I'm a newbie, so try and make explanations easy to understand…

You'd best be specific about what you are trying to download. Which ones are successful and which ones not.
Also which browser including version and what plugins you are using - in fact have you tried disabling all plugins/extensions to see if that is the cause.
Have you run updates on the extensions?
Its a bit like saying 'something on my car sometimes works and sometimes doesn't - can you fix it?'

Sometimes, but mostly not, you can get a video file with firefox -> File -> Save page as -> Web page, complete (although there's also "All files", dunno what the difference is).
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

OK, here's the issue that I have from time to time:

On some YT channels, some of the most recent videos don't come in any format which youtube-dl will deal with. This is what a

Code: Select all

youtube-dl -F
usually looks like:

Code: Select all

$ youtube-dl -F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBMoRoAyOVs
[youtube] XBMoRoAyOVs: Downloading webpage
[youtube] XBMoRoAyOVs: Downloading MPD manifest
[info] Available formats for XBMoRoAyOVs:
format code extension resolution note
139 m4a audio only DASH audio 64k , m4a_dash container, mp4a.40.5@ 48k (24000Hz)
140 m4a audio only DASH audio 144k , m4a_dash container, mp4a.40.2@128k (48000Hz)
160 mp4 256x144 DASH video 192k , mp4_dash container, avc1.4d400c, 30fps, video only
133 mp4 426x240 DASH video 419k , mp4_dash container, avc1.4d4015, 30fps, video only
134 mp4 640x360 DASH video 772k , mp4_dash container, avc1.4d401e, 30fps, video only
135 mp4 854x480 DASH video 1077k , mp4_dash container, avc1.4d401f, 30fps, video only
136 mp4 1280x720 DASH video 2187k , mp4_dash container, avc1.4d401f, 30fps, video only (best)
After several hours these videos will appear in the usual downloadable formats though. But how can I download the video right away? Obviously there is the format which streams when I view the video on YouTube!

Surely some of your problem may be a result of copyright protection by YT or the poster to YT?

I don't understand that question. Could you be clearer?

I normally use youtube-dl from the command line, but for particularly difficult files I use this web based downloader...
