This problem has been a thorn in my side for a long time. I tried MrEen's suggestion:

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1'

That didn't fix it. I found this post, https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206813, which seems to suggest that setting CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI=y might fix the problem, but I don't know where that setting is (sheepish grin).

It happens to me every so often. Why? When it happens, mpv stays in a short video/audio loop, firefox with youtube for example too, Audacious and Vlc don't seem to affect it
