How do I change what program an extension opens?

Post by wutsinterweb »

In Cinnamon how do I choose what program, such as clementine, is opened with an extension such as .flac? I've totally gone dumb and I can't even search for an answer.

I've been using Mint for over 4 years, but I'm still a slow learner. I have a website: https://pickfetish.com. It is dedicated to guitar/instrument picks.

Ok, I looked in the file manager and I can choose what a specific extension opens with, but is there a page/window where I can go through all of the extensions?

You're looking for mime types. I don't use Cinnamon, but in Xfce there's Menu > Settings > Mime Type Editor for changing this. Just search the Menu for mime and you should find it I would think.

Nope, not there.

What's not where? The editor, or the filetype within the editor?

I did a search for mime in the menu, nothing came up.

Right click on the file you want to change the default program. From the menu, select "Open With" and then "Other Application...". Select the application that you want to open this file, and then click on "Set as default".

Hrmmm. Mine is Xfce specific (xfce4-mime-settings) so I'm not sure what to look for now.

The info most likely resides in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list, but I've never manually altered that file, so if you're going to try, make a backup first.

Of course, Welcome's post should suffice for changing what opens what, but I got sidetracked with the "but is there a page/window where I can go through all of the extensions?" part.
