That's almost the exact opposite of what should be happening with Auto-Mute Mode disabled! This is odd.

I'd like you test for a possible jack detection issue. Install alsa-tools (the quick method is apt install alsa-tools in the terminal) then run this command with the headphones plugged in and again with them unplugged:
