HD video playback on battery stutters/glitches

Post by simmohk »

Hello again forum!

I'm currently testing Mint 20 on my secondary laptop - before making the possible migration on all my devices. Very pleased with the OS, and the support and help this forum provides.

I've encountered something I feel like a total computer novice asking, since I know so many ways I would go about this in Win10.

Playing HD video when the computer is not connected to power supply, both in VLC and/or in browsers is a different experience. I get small stutters and glitches which do not happen when when connected with the charger. This must have something to do with the computer's power management, the only problem is that I have no clue how to configure it in Mint 20 =( The computer is a intel/nvidia GPU which I think Optimus has handled fine in other cases.

Worth mentioning is I always keep Optimus on the "Nvidia on-demand" setting regardless if I run on battery or are connected with power supply. Changing to nvidia (performance mode) do not solve anything.

There was a nvidia driver update which I installed a couple of days ago, and I thinking back I cannot remember this being a problem before that. On the other hand, I cannot really remember if I played any HD material on battery then

Thanks again for all the help and any tips are very welcome!
