Loud continuous noise on Zoom and Audacity

From about 2 weeks ago using Zoom on 2 notebooks with 19.2 XFCE and 19.3 XFCE a lot of noise was emitted on wearing a headset. The headset has been working fine on Zoom for 6 months.

I bought another headset and exactly the same thing happened with the brand new headset.

I have tested the headsets new and old (headphones plus microphone) on my Android phone and it works perfectly without any loud background noise.

Any thoughts on the sudden change?

Hi wedwardes,

Play something with Audacity so you're hearing the noise and while it's playing run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste that output.

Actually, before trying that delete the files in /home/YourUserName/.config/pulse and reboot. If the issue is still present, then do the above.

I tried

delete the files in /home/YourUserName/.config/pulse and reboot. If the issue is still present

Hrmm, I'm struggling to think on this one. Let's also look at pacmd list-sources please.

Oh, I'll bet this might be the loopback module causing this.

Let's see pacmd list-modules as well.

Well I guess I was wrong about the loopback module.

Let's get a look at your sound setup with this command:

Okay. Try this:

In the terminal run alsmixer -c1 and arrow over to the Internal Mic Boost column. Press the down arrow once, then test the mic. If still too noisy, lower it the final step and test again.

Getting there via alsamixer -c1

Fine without headphones. Still noise with headphones. So tinkering.

I never understood why this was the case but on my laptop I had to mute the "Internal mic" in alsamixer in terminal and use the "Mic" in its place.

I have only the default microphone in the laptop hardware, ie, an internal mic, so that didn't make sense to me but nevertheless it works fine that way, so double check your mic settings and try all manner of options.

Yikes! That sounds like the BIOS misreporting what is available and where.

Just had another thread with a similar issue. Try pulling the headset plug out just a tiny little bit and see if that has any impact. If not, try making sure it's in as far as it'll go.

Pulling the plug out slightly has the same effect on Audacity and Volume control shows Internal Microphone instead of Microphone (plugged in)

Okay, I may have figured this out.

According to my research, that machine has a combo port. Not separate ports for headphones and microphone. How yours was showing both a mic plugged in as well as headphones plugged in I can't say, but what we need is a headset mic option instead.

Run this in the terminal then reboot:

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/hp11-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi'
Hopefully that will give you a headset mic option to use instead of the microphone option. Then the microphone option can be muted in alsamixer that I'm betting is causing this noise.

If that one doesn't add a headset option, there are some others we can try. And don't worry about Dell being in the name. The fix applies to your codec regardless of manufacturer.

I've done something and now even the internal microphone is dead.

So I am re-installing Linux 19.2 XFCE.

Back soon.
