[SOLVED] Mint Cinnamon 20 Underwater Like Sound

Post by Vestingbell »

I have tried watching youtube on my desktop however I found that the volume was very quiet and that the volume also sounded disorientated as if it was underwater. I know that these earphones I'm using aren't the problem as they work on my other devices, is there something else that I could do? The sound also works on the dummy test output in the sound settings.

Hi Vestingbell,

There are a few things that might be at play here. Instead of asking for various outputs, let's get everything in one go with this command:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The last line of output will have a URL pointing to your sound setup. That should help guide our next steps.

Here is the result of that code.
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 2039 100 2039 0 0 2043 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 2041
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfsd-fuse file system /run/user/1000/gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.

Right off the bat I see two instances of pulseaudio running:

Code: Select all

jinmyung 941 0.0 0.1 1334624 18440 ? S<sl 10:44 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no --log-target=journal
jwon1750 4903 0.0 0.1 1070076 18020 ? S<sl 11:03 0:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --daemonize=no --log-target=journal
I don't know if that might cause your issue, but see if logging one of those users out makes the sound clear.

I'm still looking at the rest of the output.

I just realized that youtube seems likes only one of the apps with this sound problem. Twitter seems to work fine. Will that help solve the problem?

I don't understand why but after trying some of your solutions on the other sound problems it seems to work. Thank you.

Maybe. Especially if it up being the only place where this is happening. See if this fixes the Youtube sound;

In whatever browser you're using, there should be an option to enable/disable Hardware Acceleration. Try changing whichever it's set to to the other.

If that doesn't work, also delete the files in /home/YourUserName/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal. Restart the browser and test the sound again.

The problem started again today, and this time pulse audio is showing my user twice and I think that may be the problem. Here is the code:
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 2039 100 2039 0 0 3398 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 3398
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfsd-fuse file system /run/user/1000/gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.

The second one is fine. That's just the script having grepped the word pulseaudio.

I'm looking through the rest now.

See if this improves things:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/aspire-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel model=aspire'
Reboot after that and test. If it makes things worse, remove it with this followed by another reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/aspire-fix.conf

I'm not sure if this will help but I just noticed that the bgm for videos is very loud compared to the talking. Maybe that means its a problem with the equalizer?

I did what you suggested but there doesn't seem to be a difference.

Well, the weird thing is you only have stereo options, no surround sound. But you have surround, center and LFE mixer controls in alsamixer (use alsamixer -c1 to see them).

It's possible the aspire quirk above will add other options. Often, the voices are on the center channel I believe.

See if playing with those mixers controls makes any difference. Use the m key to unmute them (muted columns show MM at the bottom instead of OO) and the up arrow to raise the levels.

I tried checking alsa mixer, but found that there was no control panel for headphones which seems weird. It just says 00 with no bars.

The one Headphone column is just the switch. the m key will mute it then unmute it. Front must be what determines the Headphone volume.

I'm not sure if moving them around is helping blindly is helping. Could you screenshot your alsamixer so that I can just copy it?

I have a completely different set of controls. What I was saying was to unmute the Surround, Center and LFE columns and give them decent volume. I doubt though that this is going to have an impact.

I'm going to look once more, but I didn't spot anything else unusual in your output.

Another thing to add is that the bgm sounds perfectly fine, its just the talking that seems underwater.
