Ahh! I think I know what it might be. In alsamixer -c1, arrow over to the Channel Mode column. Press the up or down arrow keys to change 2ch to 6ch.

After doing that and closing alsamixer, run pulseaudio -k then let's see the output of pacmd list-cards please.

Okay, we have surround options! What kind of speakers are connected?

I'd suggest installing (if necessary) and running PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) and on the Configuration tab, try the different options to see what works best. Start with Analog Stereo Duplex, but see if any of the others are also good.

These results were just from my apple earphones, not any speaker.

Okay, set the Profile to Analog Stereo Duplex, then lets see the output of amixer -c1

And do you have any other headphones/earphones/etc.? Apple products are sometimes finicky.

Also, do you have Windows on this machine as well? If so, shutting down instead of rebooting when changing from one OS to the other might prevent problems such as this.

On the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, but this will do it on the command line:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_14.2 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

The command I gave you just outputs text. It'll show me textually what alsamixer shows you graphically.

i.e. just run amixer -c1 in the terminal. Copy the output and paste it here in your next message.

That last character is the number 1, not the letter l, in case that's what you typed. It should work based on this output above:

Code: Select all

index: 1
name: <alsa_card.pci-0000_00_14.2>
driver: <module-alsa-card.c>
owner module: 8
properties:
alsa.card = "1"
If it doesn't work for some reason, just run this one again:

Code: Select all

Sound still doesn't work correctly, so here is the code:
% Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current
Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed
100 2039 100 2039 0 0 3818 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 3811
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfsd-fuse file system /run/user/1000/gvfs
Output information may be incomplete.

Okay, in all honesty, this shouldn't help, but we'll see what happens. Run each of these then test the sound:

Code: Select all

amixer -c1 set Surround 100% toggle

Code: Select all

amixer -c1 set Center 100% toggle

Code: Select all

amixer -c1 set LFE 100% toggle

Did you unplug your headphones when running the curl command? I ask because of this:

Code: Select all

numid=27,iface=CARD,name='Front Headphone Jack'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=r-------,values=1
  : values=off
That might be the true source of the issue if the headphones were plugged in.

EDIT: I see when you ran it yesterday, it showed plugged in:

Code: Select all

numid=36,iface=CARD,name='Front Headphone Jack'
  ; type=BOOLEAN,access=r-------,values=1
  : values=on
Maybe it's not plugged in properly, causing intermittent issues.
