HDMI Audiomissing Profiles, Radeon HD 3690/3800 - Mint 20

Hello,

I have a fresh Ulyana Mate install with no HDMI sound. Sound Preferences shows the Radeon hardware but with no Profiles. Pulse Volume Control - Config shows some Profiles but as Unplugged. If I select the "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output (unplugged) (unavailable)", audio plays perfectly until next reboot. Touching Sound Preferences breaks it again. Never had HDMI audio issues with previous versions of Mint, although with different hardware. This particular hardware had Windows previously and it worked fine. Does this look like a Radeon issue or a regression issue in Ulyana? How do we get the HDMI Audio Profiles enabled?

Hi mioukrio, and welcome to the forum.

This is an on again/off again issue with Radeon Audio with Ubuntu based distros. Your best bet for now is to set the profile and default card manually. I can help set that up, but need to see the output of pacmd list-sinks first.

Okay, I suspect a future update will fix this, but in the meantime, see if this works. In the terminal run xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa and when the file opens add this to the bottom of the file:

Save the file then reboot and test.

It works as long as I don't touch Sound Preferences.

Yes. That has become somewhat common lately for quite a few users. I've had a few threads where I've told people to just issue the command in the terminal, or make the edit to default.pa and never touch their sound settings again. I believe this is something that will be fixed in PulseAudio 14 when it arrives.

I am having a very similar problem to mioukrio. I have tried the resolutions MrEen has on this page and on a separate page as well as others I have found on this site regarding what appears to be a common issue. My audio through HDMI has been working well for quite some time without any issues. The machine is a Win 10/Mint 19.2 dual boot also using a Radeon GPU which works fine in Win10. This may have happened after doing some minor updates, although I don't see anything other than udev that might be relevant.

When I use the desktop audio control, I can see the audio is now defaulted to the motherboard built-in audio. This has happened on occasion before, normally I just highlight the HDMI option and then choose from the stereo/5.1 Surround/7.1 Surround and everything is back to normal. Now I have only a blank line, and the drop down box has OFF as the only choice. If I pick that it just sets the HDMI to disabled and OFF. If I use pavucontrol, instead, all my normal options are listed, but now they all say "unplugged". So choosing one of them doesn't get the audio working.

I have tried from the command line and using some scripts I found to manually set the HDMI as the default without success.

I also noticed that alsamixer lists both devices ALC889 and HDMI. It is defaulting to ALC889, I can choose HDMI but all the options at the bottom show spdif instead of HDMI ports. Although that might explain why pavucontrol sees everything as unplugged.

Hi Bluray,

Looks like mostly the same issue. We might need some extra commands to get it working. Try these in the terminal:

The second command might need tweaking. That was the first profile with 5.1 available. You might prefer the first 7.1 option with this instead:

It's possible you need one of the others in the list in place of either of those. I have no way of knowing which ones were available previously.

Let us know if that works. We can then add those to /etc/pulse/default.pa with the pacmd at the front of the line removed.

Be aware that currently playing sound will not switch over after running the terminal commands. All future sound should.

Thank you very much for your help. I can see from just the audio issues, you are extremely busy on here.

I tried what you suggested. It didn't work quite as you had typed.
I had to type "pacmd set-card profile alsa_card.pci-0000_01_00.1 output:hdmi-surround" first.
Then it would accept pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-surround

I noticed in the pacmd list cards I posted earlier the defaults were:
Default sink name: alsa_output.hw_1_3
Default source name: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.iec958-stereo.monitor

output.hw_1_3 is actually for the HDMI as it lists hw 1,3 and hw 1,7 and I was testing using speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:1,3, so I may have managed to change the default.

Lately the defaults are:
Default sample spec: s16le 2ch 48000Hz
Default channel map: front-left,front-right
Default sink name: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.iec958-stereo
Default source name: alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-surround.monitor

As you can see the default source is now the correct one. I can do it manually from terminal and by changing default.pa. Even though the command is accepted without error to change the default sink to alsa_output.pci-0000_01_00.1.hdmi-surround, running pacmd list sinks still shows the default as .iec958-stereo. Adding the command to default.pa also has no affect. I have the commands as the last 3 entries in default.pa (card profile, default sink, default source).

the default audio control still has no profiles in hardware tab except off, pavucontrol lists all (HDMI +2-7, HDMI 5.1 +2-7, HDMI 7.1 +2-7) plus off. On the default audio control, on the output tab it shows port as HDMI/display port, I don't remember seeing that before. The GPU has only 1 HDMI, 1DVI, 2 Display ports. Not sure why there are so many HDMI listed, as well as hw:1,3 and hw:1,7. I am not sure which one is supposed to work. When I test, I try using both with speaker-test. I see that some people can get sound when choosing a port that shows unplugged after manually selecting it. That does not work for me, and the default returns to alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.iec958-stereo after a reboot.

I made an error in my post, that has probably preventing things from working properly. Here's the correct command that is now not missing a sash:

Through the use of pactl and pacmd commands and modifying default.pa (load-module module-stream-restore restore_device=false) in order to allow changing the default sink I have had some success.

I have the correct default sink set, and default source. I also have managed to change the status from SUSPENDED to idle or running using pactl suspend-sink 0 0. However, the default audio client has no choices other than Off. pavucontrol lists all choices but has (unplugged) listed after each choice. No audio can be heard from the TV monitor, even though pavucontrol shows a moving green bar. Running speaker-test -c 2 -r 48000 -D hw:1,3 says device busy when nothing else is playing.

I think I will just try removing the amdgpu/pro software, and then reinstalling again. I swapped my Mint 19.2 hard drive and AMD gpu to another PC, and the result was the same. I then removed the AMD HD7870 GPU and installed an AMD RX580. Audio was working via HDMI without issue after boot with the new GPU.

I did notice that the unplugged message I see from pavucontrol is valid. It shows unplugged for every port except the ones actually connected to a monitor (or TV in my case)

Previously, that command never showed any port with a connected display when HDMI didn't work for audio. I never used pavucontrol until after I experienced the issue. I did manage to get the correct HDMI port showing as default between pacmd and pactl, and default.pa, but still no audio. My latest Timeshift files are from the day of last updates, but after or one month before. I will be more careful about creating a Timeshift prior to updates even if they don't appear to be major. The uninstal/reinstall of amdgpu will be less work at this point. Sorry for the delay in replying. I will update you if the reinstall is successful or not. Thanks again for all your assistance.

Sounds good.

I know mostly squat about graphics cards, but maybe that troublesome one needs something like radeon.audio=1 added to grub. That's most likely not the correct kernel parameter, but something sort of similar. If you still struggle after the reinstall, I'll try to find the correct parameter.
