Sound on left channel only on LM 20

Post by mpg »

Decided to try Linux Mint recently, with a fresh install yesterday. Everything worked fine, except for the speaker audio which is only working on the left channel (Headphones are fine though). I already tried some solutions on the forum, even destroyed the cinnamon with a command i was not supposed to use (i reinstalled it since then), but so far no luck in finding the problem i guess.

Here is the output of:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
Link is at: https://termbin.com/3x7i

The notebook model is a Dell Inspiron i15-5578.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi mpg, and welcome to the forum.

The curl command only gave us half the output we hoped for. This happens sometimes for reasons I don't understand, but this one will get us the other half:

Code: Select all

wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
This will ask if you want to upload or save locally. Please choose upload and share the link it'll give when done.

Ok, so i reinstalled LM again since i messed up, decided to run the commands again to see if it clears things:

Curl result: https://termbin.com/6jzf
Wget result: http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=02619dc4a ... bb3ae93445

Sorry for the reinstalls.

Apologies for stating the obvious, but I suppose you are sure it's not a hardware problem?
Currently: Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit 4.6.6, AMD Ryzen5 + Geforce GT 710
Previously: LM20β, LM18.2

Ahh, this time the curl command gave everything. I don't see anything obvious in that output that would indicate an issue, so it's going to take some guesswork.

First, try running this then rebooting:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/dell-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel model=mono-speakers'
I'm not sure what that's going to do, but here's what that "fix" claims to do:
mono-speakers
Subwoofer and headset fixupes for Dell Inspiron
If it doesn't work, or makes things worse, run this to undo it:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/dell-fix.conf
And no, I'm not sure it isn't hardware, but I always go on the assumption the hardware is fine until I'm out of other ideas.

EDIT: Oops, I though the OP had asked about hardware.

So yeah, i tried running the command you suggested, but it did not work. Also i think there was some sort of cackling sound on startup and sometimes because of that fix, but i am not sure. I already reverted it.

About hardware issues, i am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it, because back when it had windows 10 installed it worked fine. I also remember it used to have an specific control panel just for the sound of the notebook, it was probably installed with the soundchip driver itself.

Okay, two things to try:

1. Apply the updates in the Update Manager then reboot and test. You at least were still using the default kernel and the updates that are available may fix this.

2. If that didn't help does this produce sound on both left and right:

Code: Select all

speaker-test -t wav -c 6
I have intentionally added more than 2 channels to that command. Just want to see what works.

Ahh, I missed something. Your sound card was sleeping when you last ran those commands. If the above has made no difference, see if this gets the right channel joining the chorus:

Code: Select all

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x14 SET_POWER 0x0
You'll need to install alsa-tools to be able to run that command.

So, about the suggestions you mentioned:

1 - I already updated before running anything on the system, pretty sure i updated the kernel too. Update center shows everything up to date now.

2 - The speaker test produced sound only on the front left and center channels, barely audible on rear left. The alsa-tools command you mentioned did not work, even after reboot.

Also, i ran the diagnostics commands again:
Curl: https://termbin.com/awxyc
Wget: http://alsa-project.org/db/?f=782c0db5f ... 9ee114eb9b

And I found another potential issue. If all of the above is of no help, try running these in the terminal then test your sound:

Code: Select all

echo 0x14 0x90170110 | sudo tee /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/user_pin_configs

Code: Select all

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig
If that's the kicker we needed, it won't survive a reboot, but we can fix that.

Yes, your updates have fixed everything except for the issue you're reporting. My last post I'm hoping is what is needed now.

Tried both commands, the first one returned and hex number, the second one came back with

Code: Select all

tee: /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/reconfig: Device or resource busy
Tried rebooting and running the commands again, same results, sound did not work on right channel in any case.

Dammit I hate that Device or resource busy error!

Give me a few minutes and I'll get the instructions for the boot survivable method.

Code: Select all

[codec]
0x10ec0225 0x10280742 0

[model]
auto

[pincfg]
0x14 0x90170110
Save the above as dell-fix.fw then move it with sudo mv dell-fix.fw /lib/firmware

Now run this command then reboot and test the sound:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/dell-fix.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel patch=dell-fix.fw'
Good luck! :D

Sorry mrEen, but still no luck so far. I saved the file as .fw, but the file browser shows it as a text file, maybe that changes something (sorry for the dumb question, can't figure those things out).

The output:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel patch=dell-fix.fw

Yeah, it is just a text file. That 0x90170110 is the proper pin config for that vast majority of internal speakers. Yours was showing 0x901701a0.

Let's make sure the patch took. Let's see the output of cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0

Re: Sound on left channel only on LM 20

Post by MrEen »

Looks like it didn't, but I'm not positive it would show here:

Code: Select all

Node 0x14 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058d: Stereo Amp-Out
  Control: name="Speaker Playback Switch", index=0, device=0
    ControlAmp: chs=3, dir=Out, idx=0, ofs=0
  Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x00, stepsize=0x00, mute=1
  Amp-Out vals: [0x00 0x00]
  Pincap 0x00010014: OUT EAPD Detect
  EAPD 0x2: EAPD
Pin Default 0x901701a0: [Fixed] Speaker at Int N/A
Conn = Analog, Color = Unknown
    DefAssociation = 0xa, Sequence = 0x0
    Misc = NO_PRESENCE
  Pin-ctls: 0x40: OUT
  Unsolicited: tag=00, enabled=0
  Power states: D0 D1 D2 D3 EPSS
  Power: setting=D0, actual=D0
  Connection: 1
     0x02
Still shows Pin Default 0x901701a0.

Let's bypass that for the moment. Do you still have the ISO you used to install with? If so, boot to that and test the sound. If it works properly there, run

Code: Select all

sudo alsactl store
followed by

Code: Select all

cat /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
and save that somewhere or post it here. Then in the installed version, run xed admin:///var/lib/alsa/asound.state and delete any contents and paste in what you copied from the Live version. Finish by running sudo alsactl restore then test the sound.

Found an older bug report with a no sound at all issue with the same codec you have. When they installed Ubuntu 20.04 (which Mint 20 is based on) it fixed their issue: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/690487

And a thread here also no speaker sound where the OP never came back: viewtopic.php?t=319346

Booted from the USB this time, still does not work, but i stored the output of cat /var/lib/alsa/asound.state anyway

Code: Select all
