Video but no sound on HDMI

I just got a new cable, mini DP to HDMI, and hooked it to my monitor. I get video OK, but no sound. My old cable worked just fine until I accidently hit the mini DP end and bent it. How can I get the sound to turn on? When I go under Preferences > Sound, the HDMI option no longer shows up there as output.
I'm using LM 19.3 on Lenovo W530.

It is the cable, it doesn't matter if it works on other device. These cables have subversion protocols or even simpler some contact does not "sit" correctly on the pc because it is half a milimeter shorter.
It has happened to me and the solution was given by another cable that in theory paper was of a lower quality.
It has also happened with jack audio cable. I had to "shave" it with a knife. Not applicable in the current case this type of cable.

We should make sure the audio is actually being output to the HDMI output. Try to play some sound and run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste that output.

I rebooted the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and when I go to Preferences > Sound, I only get 'Speakers built-in audio'.
On the old cable I could do a hot connect and get video and audio.
