Built in microphone does not work after having used external one

Post by Jacopo97 »

Hello,

I have a problem with my computer's built-in microphone.
It has always worked well until I did some recordings with Audacity by plugging in and external microphone (Zoom H2 next). I was in the middle of a pretty long recording session, with the external microphone plugged in, and things started not working properly: I had to press the recording button multiple times before a recording actually started, and sometimes I had to reset the input audio setting because they got messed up. I think that those problems were due to the fact that, at the time, I was using an old USB cable that was not working so good, and so the system had trouble understanding which microphone I wanted to use.

Anyhow, the problem I am writing you about is another one: once I finally managed to get the external microphone to work properly, the built-in one got messed up. It can still record, but it sound like it is overly amplified, or something like that. Basically when nothing is recording it picks up the computers fan and amplifies it, producing a really bad background noise. When then people start to talk, everything is incredibly overly saturated.
The problem is not with Audacity only, but with any program that needs microphone, video-calls included: the only solution is to plug in the external microphone and use that one, since it is still working properly.
I do not know what is going on, but I have the feeling that all the chaos I described above might have messed up the system settings for the microphone. I hope it is only that and that I did not actually broke it ^^'
Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?

In case you need it, here is my inxi -Fxxxrzinformations:

Re: Built in microphone does not work after having used external one

Post by MrEen »

Okay, next time it happens run this in the terminal then test the built-in mic:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-source alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo
I suspect it's switching to the .monitor source when unplugging the USB mic.

Run it again, then paste the output of pacmd list-sources again please.

Re: Built in microphone does not work after having used external one

First thing to check, even though it may make no difference is the volume levels. They were quite low in that output:

Code: Select all

volume: front-left: 13107 / 20% / -41,94 dB, front-right: 13107 / 20% / -41,94 dB
Assuming that doesn't help, I'd like you to try this:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf <<<'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek'

Run that in the terminal then shut down for a few minutes. Don't just reboot. If you lose audio output after booting back up, you can remove that edit with this command and a reboot:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf
Locked

Return to “Sound”
