[SOLVED] Audacity 3.0.0 flatpak distorted audio

Post by rattkjelke »

I'm running LM 20.1 XFCE and decided to try the new version of Audacity.
I removed and purged the repo version of audacity (2.3.3) and installed the flatpak (3.0.0).
I never had problems with Audacity before but the flatpak version doesn't work.

Audio playback is extremely distorted or sounds like a static burst or fart.
This happens with .wav, .mp3 and .raw files. I don't know about other formats.
It's probably flatpak related but I don't know to troubleshoot it.

Hi rattkjelke,

As you're using the Flatpak version, I can only make guesses, but see if this helps:
If you're experiencing glitches, skips, pops or crackling in your audio playback, it's quite possibly caused by the timer-based scheduling pulseaudio now uses. Disable timer-based scheduling this way:
Users of 18.3 and earlier versions of Mint type this in the terminal: gksudo xed /etc/pulse/default.pa
Users of 19 and later versions of Mint type this in the terminal: xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa
Find the line that says load-module module-udev-detect and change it to load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
Save the file, then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and test your sound

load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0 did not fix the problem.

I should add that I have had absolutely no audio problems with any other application.
I tried the Ubuntu PPA version 2.4.2 at https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuhandbook1/ ... u/audacity and it also works perfectly.
The scratch/static audio playback only happens with Audacity 3.0.0 flatpak.
I can't find a .deb or another repo or PPA with 3.0.0 yet.

The only option I could think to try is building 3.0 from source. Some info here: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/linux/

I've been thinking about updating from 2.4 to 3, but haven't got around to it. (because I got confused when I tried, but that's beyond the point except to say that I am still a newbie with linux) But I did have a distortion problem in audacity with loops in 2.4 and here is how it got resolved:

The sampling rate and the project settings were somehow different and that was causing a problem. Maybe for some reason you have that problem.

[SOLVED] Re: Audacity 3.0.0 flatpak distorted audio

I fixed it.

I found this on their wiki page https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Linux_Issues
It says to launch Audacity from the terminal with the following command or add it to the application launcher:

Code: Select all

env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 audacity
So I edited the xfce menu item and added env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 to the beginning of the command.
So far it works.

Today Audacity was updated to version 3.0.2 in the flatpak update.
It still has the problem and the fix still works.
