Hi chrome_os_sucks, and welcome to the forum.
Chromebooks can be quite finicky to get sound working in Linux sometimes. And some newer ones might not yet be possible to get working. But we'll see if we can get yours working.
Let's get a look at your sound setup with this command:
The last line of output will have a URL pointing to the info. Pasting that URL is all I need.

Re: Linux mint no sound on ASUS Chromebook C202SA
Ugh! I hate those systems with SoC sound chips.
Your is looking a bit better than most at the moment though, so I'm going to guess at something I hope will work:
Run that in the terminal then test your sound. Check your sound settings if necessary to make sure there's volume and it isn't muted.
If that doesn't work, the first thing I gave you ran out of space so I need you to show me this output next:

Re: Linux mint no sound on ASUS Chromebook C202SA
Of course it wouldn't be that easy!
Here's the issue:
ALSA is recognizing two cards, but says only one is installed!?!
I'd like you to try the 5.8 kernel and see if that fixes this. Open your Update Manager and click on View > Linux kernels and select the highest 5.8 kernel and install it. Reboot when done and if there's still no sound run this again:
Here's the issue:
Code: Select all
!!Soundcards recognised by ALSA
!!-----------------------------
0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xd1314000 irq 315
1 [chtrt5650 ]: chtrt5650 - chtrt5650
GOOGLE-Terra-1.0
!!PCI Soundcards installed in the system
!!--------------------------------------
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Atom/Celeron/Pentium Processor x5-E8000/J3xxx/N3xxx Series High Definition Audio Controller [8086:2284] (rev 35)

cat: '/sys/module/snd_soc_sst_cht_bsw_rt5645/parameters/*': No such file or directory

Re: Linux mint no sound on ASUS Chromebook C202SA
Hello.
My apologies to all beforehand. I am a new arrival here at Linux Mint. I hope that I have the correct forum for this and I am not out of line. I love Linux Mint and most everything I've been reading in these forums. Very nice OS and great support.
I too have an Asus C202SA chromebook, chtrt5650, with no sound or proper speaker buttons functions, when I had Linux Mint 20.3 xfce installed on it. I've read, reviewed and tried numerous things, such as;

Some of these may be of help to others. But they weren't much help to me. I spend days at this, and me not being a developer, ran out of patience in spending so much time on a fairly inexpensive (soon to expire) Chromebook. So I found GalliumOS. Everything with the sound works 100%, and I now have this OS up to date on the C202SA, via sudo apt-get ...etc. However GalliumOS and its community does not seem to be continuing with Gallium anymore, when I asked them on their IRC. Plus, I'd rather have Linux Mint installed, as this is what I am using on my other PCs. When I had it installed on my C202SA it worked beautifully and booted fast, just no sound.
Anyway, I am happy to provide you folks with whatever config files and information that you'd like to look at on my GalliumOS Chromebook. Maybe this will help get this GalliumOS sound & keyboard support into Linux Mint, for this persnickety chtrt5650 chip? Please let me know. Thanks!
