bad Video quality, doesn't matter if NETFLIX / Prime Video Stream or a local file in VLC or similar player

Post by drahreg »

Hi,

I tried to find something on it, but I do not even know where the issue might be, nor I am sure how to describe it properly.
If I watch a Film e.g. on NETFLIX or Amazon Prime (Firefox) or a local Video file in VLC (any format e.g. mkv), the Sound is always as perfect as it could be on a Notebook, but the picture quality is unsatisfying. On Scenes with a lot of darkness in the background or e.g. fog, it looks like someone painted it, while the actors usually are displayed ok. Under Win10 on the same notebook, there is no issue like this.

I thought maybe the display driver, so I tried both available drivers:
I tried NVIDIA driver 390 and the open source driver, same result (see inxi output below for details).

Maybe it is a codec issue, but I am not sure if so and if, how to fix this in Linux. Help is appreciated.

At some point in the future, I will reformat the whole Notebook and I have configured a backup, so if anything to solve this issue should break the installation, this will not be a problem. And don't worry about the Windows installation, all important files are backed up and it already broke itself with an update.

Thanks in advance.
