I've had excellent results with a Pioneer brand external drive (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZT ... UTF8&psc=1) with CDs and DVDs. I haven't tried it with Blurays yet.

The only two I've used for DVD and Bluray are VLC and Kodi. I found that Kodi tended to look a bit better. Not sure what type of audio features you're looking for.

mpv is a good choice for a video player, but I think they are depracating disk support.

thanks to everyone for the suggestions, honestly, coming from windows, I expected a more dense array of player programs, than 3-4 programs, I tried kodi, but I don't like it, it's just a matter of taste, I prefer and I will continue to use vlc, it seems to me the most complete.
thanks again, and best regards to all

Just to add as a comment that this situation is largely due to optical discs being more or less dead technology at the very least on the computer. Still however technology with legal ramifications: in the case of DVD mostly theoretically so, but in the case of the encryption normally used on commercial Blu-Rays still practically as well. It ends up saying that few people actually care to work on it; that as such Kodi which tends to be used in a TV-context much like hardware DVD/BD players are/were is still "mostly okay" but that generally speaking support for (commercial) optical media has been bitrotting for a few years now.

thanks, it's really a great pity, I have a collection of over 2000 original DVD and bluray movies, plus another 1000 or so in .iso format on hdd, i will have to equip with a robust external usb burner to convert them

Frankly I believe that people should generally feel freer to keep e.g. a Windows partition or machine around for things such as BIOS or other firmware flashing, gaming, media consumption as here --- or even dealing with bloody win-modems as in that other thread. Linux can certainly be a source of frustration otherwise. Has never been different and will undoubtedly never be different.

Coming from Windows, I remember there wasn't much in the way of good software for video either. I used VLC for DVD playback. It works fine and handles the menus. But, even on Windows, there was not any free software for playing Bluray disks. Because Bluray disks are encrypted you had to buy commercial software for playback. I think I had one called PowerDVD or CyberDVD (cost about $40). And they were terrible programs. Limited features, locked up a lot, and constantly popped up self-promoting ads. Then the company went out of business and didn't support Windows 10, so I had to buy another program that was just as bad.

As far as I know, in terms of free software for BluRay playback with menu support, VLC and Kodi are pretty much the only options on Windows as well. And both require similar workarounds to get the aacs keys as they do on Linux.
