Notes on audio recording and CPU

Post by Flemur »

It's good to minimize CPU use when recording audio so as to prevent glitches.

I always use a recorder that displays the waveform, and the waveform display can use a lot of cpu, depending on...stuff.

Adobe audition: Uses a lot of CPU if you're zoomed in on the waveform (when it's displayed as a curve), much less if you're zoomed out.

ocenaudio: Uses about 30% CPU when recording in the current workspace (or "virtual desktop"), doesn't matter on zoom or if it's covered by another window, but drops to 5% if you run it in a workspace that's not visible.

audacity is the weird one: Also about 30% CPU when recording and showing the waveform, but it jumps to > 60% CPU when it's in a workspace that's not visible. No comprendo that one...
