No Sound Mint 20.1 64-bit Cinnamon; line out FM2A68M-DG3+

Post by Dach »

Hello. This is a computer for my aged parents and any help would be greatly appreciated. They were fine with a switch to Mint after Windows 7 was abandoned but I was forced to replace a faulty motherboard the other week and can't get sound (and they're getting impatient). I would have preferred to use HDMI sound, but this motherboard only has VGA and DVI outputs making analog the only option. I'm using 64-bit Mint if that's important (in accordance with the forum rules even though I would guess there isn't a 32-bit version of 20 or 20.1).

Shortened list of current results:
  • motherboard (fm2a68m-dg3+) produces sound from the rear, green "front" line-out when navigating UEFI setup, but LinuxMint 20 and 20.1 Cinnamon are silent (same problem with the "live" installation versions of both 20 and 20.1 when booting off a USB thumb drive)
  • the "pavucontrol" volume control tab properly recognizes when the line is plugged in or unplugged and mute is off ("Built-in Audio Analog Stereo"); "alsamixer" is also fully un-muted with volume up for every channel ("HD-Audio Generic" & "Realtek ALC662 rev1")
  • I've deleted the contents of user/.config/pulse many times (usually with restarts and once with "pulseaudio -k"), force reloaded alsa two or three times (with restarts), reinstalled alsa and pulseaudio (again with restart)
  • I test the sound after every change with "test sound" in Mint's Sound Settings and by using Youtube in restarted sessions of Firefox
Thank you in advance.

Re: No Sound Mint 20.1 64-bit Cinnamon; line out I searched -DG3+

Post by Dach »

I'm guessing since Mint can recognize when the line is plugged in or not (and since I can verify the sound works and is turned on in the UEFI) that the fix is some small change away. Any thoughts on what to try next, or what might be suspect in my Mint hardware listings, would be highly appreciated.

(I searched the forums for this motherboard model and found many threads, but none with sound issues and it looks like that's still the case so that leaves me extra confused as to why my parent's configuration wouldn't be working with Mint.)
