Re: Sound disappears, and I don't know what happened

Post by SMG »

Within the past few days, my LM20.1 install received updates for ALSA and pulseaudio. Maybe those updates caused a change on your system? Do you have any Timeshift snapshots of when the sound was working? If so, perhaps you want to revert to that snapshot and test updates to see if any of them made a difference on your computer.

The updates I received were:
pulseaudio 1.13.99.1-1ubuntu3.11 packages (six packages with this number)
alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2-1ubuntu0.8 (just one package)

You can see what updates you installed in Update Manager. Select View > History of Updates.

Thanks for reply!
Unfortunately, I don't have a snapshot of the previous version.
Installed:
pulseaudio 1:13.99.1-1ubuntu3.10 (but installed only 3 packages: pulseaudio, pulseaudio-module-bluetooth, pulseaudio-utils)
alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2-1ubuntu0.7

Was this information the old version or the new version of the listing in Update Manager? Update Manager lists both.

The versions I listed were the new ones which just came through a couple of days ago. If you did not install the newer ones, then it is possible some other change happened on your system to affect the sound.

Sometimes kernel changes can affect sound. You can boot into grub and select an older kernel to test that theory for the change.

When I had a similar problem it happened after I allowed 3 ALSA updates to happen. The fix was to was to use my TimeShift backup to go back to a time before the Alsa updates, then blacklist ALSA when the Update Mgr ran. Yes, this took a little time. Situations like this is why backup is essential.
