CPU at 100% when opening mic in a visio-conference

Post by mohican »

Hi,
I got a new laptop few weeks ago. All is fine except when I try to participate in a visio conference.
When I open my microphone, within a few secons CPU climbs to 100% and stays there as long as there is sound going in. My sound is distorted for the listeners.
No problem if the mic is closed (image is fine).

Problem is the same with Firefox or Chromium.
Problem is the same if I use webRTC (Jitsi Meet / BigBlueButton) or Zoom from browser.

Any Idea ?

Here is the inpux from inxi

I have made several tests with Jitsi Meet on Firefox, with different live GNU/Linux systems :
  • Ubuntu 20 : no problem CPU around 60%
  • Mint 20.1 Xfce : CPU around 85% (45% without the camera), sound is ok
  • Mint 20.1 Cinnamon : CPU at 100% even without the camera, sound heavily distorted
So clearly we have a Mint problem here  + a Cinnamon problem

I installed Mint Xfce 20.1 (instead of Cinnamon) and now the results are the same as with Cinnamon : 97% CPU and heavily distorted sound ! (strange that it worked better from live USB key  )

Finally I installed Ubuntu 20.04.
At first try, CPU doesn't go over 60%
But later - after installing updates - it also reaches 100% even with default profile

I tryed different web browsers (Chromium and Falkon did not recognize the camera, Midori is not compatible with Jitsi Meet).
Eventually I got the best result with Opera : CPU is at 100% but image and sound are not distorted.

Hi mohican,

Considering the updates eventually lead to the same issue, I'd try the 5.11 kernel if you haven't already. There are newer sound bits in that kernel versus the 5.4 kernel, and some things get backported to 5.4 where they might be causing a conflict.

Thank you for your suggestion.
However I have the same bad results with kernel 5.11 (testing Ubuntu 20.04.3 live).

The only moment where it worked was with Ubuntu 20.04 fresh install (kernel 5.4), however it does not work well with Mint 20 which is also coming with Kernel 5.4.
It's not possible at the moment to figure out what update messed things out.

I'll stick with Vivaldi browser (cpu at 100% but sound and image are ok).
