fresh install of LM20.2 sound on firefox streaming BAD!

Post by sandbagger »

just installed LM 20.2 ( 10/14/21) on a machine and the sound started out ok then some kind of echo happened followed by screeching and hisses. I stream from the site https://wgntv.com/on-air/live-streaming/ using firefox 93.0 as installed with LM20.2.

I did some searching on the forums and found the below. It works for few minutes then back to echo, hissing and scratches.

viewtopic.php?t=356764

This machine has always been used as a media device running Ubuntu so I know the hardware and networking is ok.

It's something to do with LM and I don't know how to fix it. Can someone help please.

the setup is the graphics card HDMI is hooked into my tv set's Hdmi slot. I don't have any other audio equipment.

here is the machine spec

I am now using my E550 ThinkPad, and made sure that all updates were installed, to do so, I had to enable 2 of the optional resources, as it would complain that not ALL applications were available to install Updates.

Once I did that, all of the updates went thru as they should.

I then did a cntl-alt-backspace to get Cinnamon to reload and enable FF from Vs 92.0 to the current version

I then opened the link on WGN and watched the commercials and then it went into the regularly scheduled programming, a Comedy show at the time I write this.

works fine from here.

on this post, I am back on my LM19.3 Cinnamon daily driver laptop, and I opened up Update Manager and noticed that the two options I had to ENABLE on LM20.2 are not needed in 19.3

so, I suggest that you turn them ON and see how that works.

first 19.3

and the 2 options I enabled, I suspect you only need the 1st option, not the 2nd one.

First of all EXCELLENT picture. Always happy to see a happy dog who clearly is enjoying life.
second, thank for the heads up on this. I would NEVER have found it in a million years. I am used to just shoving the os onto a machine and just starting to code. Gotta say that this release has been "interesting" so far. This sound issue was going to be the final straw and had me reaching for my trusty backups.
I'm trying to learn a little more about linux but this config stuff is REALLY a pain. We just watched about 2 hours of Kodi and thanks to you and Rene all was well.\

thanks again and give fido a pat from us in Chicago :-)

The following should work as a workaround for the audio issue in Firefox:

In Firefox's about:config, set media.webspeech.synth.enabled to false.

This tweak stops Firefox from launching an audio process called speech-dispatcher.
Speech-dispatcher can trigger a bug in the underlying audio sub system.

It's not a fix for the underlying bug, but it should hopefully work, until a bugfix arrives.

Other discussions about the bug (for reference/history):
A second sound stream plays at the same time? viewtopic.php?f=48&t=353254
sound gets scratchy by random viewtopic.php?f=48&t=349104
Kernel on Mint viewtopic.php?f=90&t=354543

Hope this helps.

thanks bashblaster
I'll get right on this when I get back. It's a mystery HOW you spot these kinds of things as there are so many moving parts theses days. I thank you for taking the time and fingers crossed for the fix :-)
