Sound Not Working After Upgrading to xfce Mint from chromeOS

Post by vmox »

Hello! I'm a relative newbie (used Ubuntu a decade ago, been using Mint for a week) so please be patient. After much googling, I haven't been able to find a solution and hope that you all can help.

Volume Control > Config > Built-in Audio says there are three ports (HDMI, HDMI2, HDMI3) each of Digital Stereo, Surround Sound 5.1, and Surround Sound 7.1 but all are listed as (unplugged)(unavailable)
Output Devices displays only 'Dummy Audio'
The headphone jack also does not work.

I updated the kernel to 5.11.0-38 thinking that would help, but I got some warning that said VGA Driver i915 may be incompatible with it (which is what my graphics card uses) so I switched it back to 5.8.0-63

I wasn't sure what sort of information you would need so here's what other people with similar problems were asked to provide.

Info from alsamixer:
/proc/asound/version : Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k5.11.0-generic
I muted/unmuted all of the three thingies that pop up (S/PDIF, S/PDIR 1, S/PDIF2) and tried to up-arrow to turn them up but they stayed at 00

copypasted relevant info from lspci -vv :

Could you also share full system information, the VGA thing may instead also be solvable. Open System Reports from your menu, go to the System Information tab in the left sidebar and then on the right click Copy button. Paste the copied information here.
