Sound only in browsers <SOLVED>

Post by keithterrill »

I have had this problem for a while but being away most of the time have not dedicated time to resolving the issue.

I have no sound except if running a video or audio in a browser (Chrome or Firefox). If I use the Sound --> Test Sound, I get nothing. If I run a video from my EMBY I get great stereo sound. Ditto for YouTube, and Facebook.

With alsamixer I have muted and unmuted everything I can and tested.... no changes. Except the browser sound is going through the PCM and that I can control. But, all other channels appear to not be working.

I have uninstalled, purged, and reinstalled, the alsa-base. And then force-reoload.

I have used pavucontrol to select different ports, configurations, etc.....

I have run "amixer set Master unmute" and then same for Speaker, Headphone, no changes...

I have searched here, and in Ubuntu forums for a solution. Most of what I find the problem appears to be the opposite, that they don't have sound when in the browser -or- totally no sound.

I also ran

Code: Select all

 ME ~ $ curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
The results are at: https://termbin.com/ydbr

So..... any suggestions?

Does it happen to work properly if you boot to a live session of Mint 20.2?

Linux Mint 18.3 went end of life in April and stopped receiving updates at that time.

Well, yes, it appears to work if any live session is booted. Also, I have versions 17, 18, 19, and 20 in Virtualbox running on this system and they all work in vbox.

I am going to fresh install either a 19 or 20 and then see how it goes. I hesitate because my main home computer is still on 17.3 and I don't have any problems, but when I updated my father to a 20 we had problems and I downgraded him to a 19 in order to get things to work.

In any case.... I am going to move off of the 18.

I am currently using an HP laptop with a second-gen Intel processor (Sandy Bridge) and running the 5.4 kernel on LM20.2, so I would expect your same gen HP should work with LM20.
