Microphone is not working: I'm using Acer Swift

Post by petch »

Hi, I'm just another guy with a microphone problem.

I just installed Linux mint along dualboot with windows10 and it works nicely. I played videos and the sound is working properly. However, I can't speak on microphone when I started zoom call.
I've tried google and follow along a lot of posts with no success. I hope you guys could help me out. I'm trying to include as much info as I can think of.

Post by HAWR »

Hello petch,

I don't know, if you use the laptop's internal microphone or an external one, but there is no microphone shown in settings. I saw in another forum the same problem with Zoom. I have a guess, that it could be a bug with the kernel 5.4.0-94 (and 5.4.0-92). So please reboot and choose in the grub menu the Advanced Option, look for a kernel <5.4.0-92 and select it for the start. Then test again your microphone.

Hi HAWR,

- So I tried booting with different kernel version (my current version is 5.4.0-94)
using advance option I tried 5.4.0-91 my microphone still doesn't work
using advance option I tried 5.8.0-63 now all my sounds are gone too
so I go back to 5.4.0-94

- I use internal microphone, sorry I didn't mention that

- So I see in another posts using this commands, I hope it gives you guys more info on my problem.

So I make a guess that my internal microphone isn't detected (I'm not quite sure). So I think that these infos might help you guys investigate the root cause of the issue.

Re: Microphone is not working: I'm using Acer Swift

Post by HAWR »

Hello petch,
So I make a guess that my internal microphone isn't detected
Yes, you are right. I can't see it anywhere. Okay, we know now, that the problem isn't related to kernels. The next step should disabling Fast Startup in Windows. This Fast Startup lets Windows never really shutdown and so devices could be left in a state, that they aren't usable in Linux. On the following website you find a how-to for diabling Fast Startup. After that is done, please make a real shutdown, wait a few minutes, boot again to Linux and see, if something has changed. By the way, you can attach pictures here in the forum via the Attachment tab under the text field.

Hi,
I have same laptop and same problem with my mic. I tried shutting down the fast startup and the problem persists.
