LM20.3 + NUC11PAHi7 = no sound over HDMI ?

Post by jerry_nz »

Hi there!

Long time lurker, first time poster... treat me nice!

I have a freshly installed Linux Mint 20.3 on my freshly bought Intel Nuc "NUC11PAHi7" and I'm moooostly set up. Last thing that has me boggled is getting sound to function over HDMI through my AV receiver.

My older nuc (Linux Mint 20.03 (?)) does this without drama so I can verify its something to do with the new set up and not the receiver.

I've tried a fair few suggestions from other posts already, but I have a feeling I might be missing the obvious this time.

I'm going to continue to debug over the next day or 12 but any tips are hugely appreciated, and please let me know if i can provide more info.

Thanks,
Jerry

and lastly, an image showing that sound seems to be "working" (the bottom most green bar is pumping up and down with the music i'm playing) but obviously... nothing being passed through HDMI:

What shows up when you click the 'Output Devices' Tab?

The Top item there should be the one for HDMI.
Check that it is in fact showing something like 'HDMI / Display Port (plugged in) and that the Volume slider is up around the 100% mark. Also that the little Speaker symbol (next to the Padlock) is not Muted.

Then also check the Configuration Tab to see that the Top item there says something like:
Built-in audio
Profile: Digital Stereo (HDMI Output)

If it does not, look for a HDMI option in the drop down list that DOES NOT show as '(unavailable)'.

ok, snuck on to the machine and nabbed the info. Apologies for the screengrabs but its easier than my interpretive dancing!

I haven't had a chance to debug further unfortunately. Hopefully get a chance in the coming days.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

I think that all looks ok to me. And the drop down has no other options except 'HDMI/DisplayPort (plugged in)

this also kinda looks ok to me as well :/

and the options in here look like this:

did a little further testing...

i plugged the hdmi directly into the tv (by-passing the av-receiver) and after a reboot successfully got sound coming out there.

my thoughts now are:
-- phew, i dont have a busted NUC computer
-- does linux mint have problems sending audio signals to receivers generally?
-- are my settings on the receiver some how not ok with this newer linux box (but somehow ok with my older one)

the thick plottens, and i will do some more testing tomorrow or the next day

thanks

It's probably obvious and you probably tried it already, but there are a lot of options with HDMI Output in that list that do NOt have (unavailable) next to them.
I imagine you tried each of those with the HDMI cable plugged into the AV receiver - just to see if one of them makes noise?

Were they all playing the 'Sound of Silence"?

hahaaa - will double check my Simon & Garfunkel soundtracks to be sure!

and I am pretty confident i tried all those options, but will defo give it another go through. I rarely trust myself with this stuff!
Currently I'm assuming that since the system thinks its playing, it may be an external issue rather than the machine itself.

With that in mind I've been reading up on Onkyo receiver issues to do with HDMI and it does seem there are some. So when I'm back I'll be trying some of them also.

If i stumble upon the answer I will certainly be replying!

aaaand nope, still stuck :(

I tested every output there was in 'pavucontrol' without anything changing. I also tried powering off the receiver completely (ie switched off at the wall for 30+ seconds) without success

I also tried a later linux kernal, but still no luck (from 5.11.0-46-generic to 5.13.0-28-generic)

I'm thinking I've nearly exhausted all my trouble shooting for this issue and got myself an expensive soundless brick :(

Left field question: I did my original set up and install of this machine when it was connected to a pc monitor that has no sound... would that have affected things some how? Not grabbed the correct drivers/installs?

And next odd question: if i wanted to downgrade Linux Mint to the version that is working on my other Nuc, is that asking for trouble and/or recommended?

Grasping at straws,
Jerry

hmmm negatives all round :(

and daaaamn I'm thankful for timeshift! started getting full lockups and/or reboots after a minute or so of a reboot. Or this:
Image
followed by other nasty similar glitches

managed to timeshift back to yesterday

I feel like I've exhausted all of the machines possibilities (but still super happy to run tests or provide info!) and will move on to a full factory reset of the av-receiver.

#gulp

and for the record i tried tonight:
-- kernal to 5.13 (I think that was what started my glitching)
-- bios update
-- followed these suggestions: http://mreen.epizy.com/SoundFixTips.html?i=2
-- and these suggestions: http://mreen.epizy.com/SoundFixTips2.html?i=1
-- and then a timeshift back to yesterday

howdy, my google-fu is letting me down...

i have a work friend helping me with some suggestions:
-- if i wanted to test 44khz pcm audio, how would i go about setting that in Linux?
-- should i be investigating HDCP handshakes at all?

Any help appreciated
Thanks!

I just wanted to reply and say I am in the exact same boat: NUC11PAHi7 LM 20.3, connected to a Denon AVR via HDMI with video but no sound. As with your setup, if I connect directly to my TV via HDMI sound works fine. So, the receiver is a key piece to the puzzle. That said, you and I have different receivers. I also was previously using this receiver with another machine running an older version of Linux Mint. But that was Nvidia hardware and this is Intel.

I'll add one twist to the mystery. If I connect the NUC to the TV and get sound working, then without rebooting, connect the NUC via HDMI to my receiver, video and sound will continue to work until the next reboot. The opposite is also true. If I start with my NUC connected to the receiver and have no sound, if I hot-swap the HDMI directly to the TV I do not have sound until I either restart ALSA or reboot. This seems to tell me the issue is Linux-side and related to the audio system initialization process. I like your idea of it being related to HDCP.

How old is your receiver? Mine is circa 2009. For what its worth, my use case is to use the NUC as a headless audio server with remote control via nomachine or maybe operate as a Pulse Audio sink. So, figuring this out is very important to me to say the least. I guess my point with saying that is I am motivated to help. If you have suggestions for diagnostics I could run.

So far I have updated to the latest kernel available on the update manager:
Linux nuc 5.13.0-28-generic #31~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 19 14:08:10 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And also flashed Intels latest BIOS: BIOS Update [PATGL357] 2/1/2022.

I'm new to this forum, but not Linux. I love Mint. Thanks in advance for everyone's help on this matter.

iiiinteresting!

i actually stopped debugging as i realised a new tv was on the horizon for our family, so we'll just use the inbuilt apps for playing media. The problematic nuc will be relegated to the office and used to serve the data. It's definitely not a proper fix though...

I am watching with interest though, so please update here if you manage to fix the issue (also I'm noting the other very similar sounding bugs cropping up in the forum too)

cheers
