Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed [SOLVED]
Hi there,
I am currently having some sound issues with my computer. I am currently running Linuxmint 20.2 uma MATE (Kernel: x86_64 Linux 5.4.0-110-generic --&-- DE: MATE 1.24.0). My logitec usb headset will not work. I cannot get it to play audio nor is the mic working. I think it might be a driver issue but cant be sure. My devices are Nvidia yet they are showing as Intel drivers? I was trying to google the issue and a few people were saying its a pulse audio issue but from what I think Im looking at mate is handling my audio rather then pulse?
When running " inxi -A " this is what I get...

Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Hello 2ton20one,
the driver for the Nvidia HDMI audio isn't incorrect. The snd_hda_intel sound driver is also used for it. To better assess the situation, please show the following terminal outputs with plugged-in USB headset (for a better readability see point 5 here how to get help):
(it's a lower case L in -l)
What is the exact model name of the Logitech USB headset?
Please install the PulseAudio VolumeController (pavucontrol) and check, if the headset is detected there (later in the Menu):

Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Hello and thank you for the response. I apologize for my lack of info and appreciate the link you provided.
The make and model of the Logitech headset is "H390 USB Computer Headset" and I ran the provided commands and have attached two text files including the results.
I ran the command to install PulseAudio but it will not launch. PusleAudio states "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait..." but it doesn't do anything and I am forced to close the window.
I rebooted thinking that would fix it but the issue persists. I believe this is due to installing/uninstalling PulseAudio at an earlier point whilst trying to get a midi device setup. The headset is recognized now by the default sound preferences application. I was able to test recording audio via audacity but the PulseAudio application still is giving the same message as before. I'm not sure how to fix this so any guidance is greatly appreciated.
Please let me know if anything further is needed and thank you once again.

Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
That's interesting and can be the reason for your problems. Let's see first, if there is another process is running except pulseaudio (post the output):I believe this is due to installing/uninstalling PulseAudio at an earlier point whilst trying to get a midi device setup.
Code: Select all
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Hey there, again ty, here is what I get when running " sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/* "...
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
I expected something different. Is pulseaudio no longer installed?
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
It should be installed. I ran the command you provided and it appeared to install. Is there a way to purge it from my system and start fresh? I think I goofed and messed something up while trying to get my midi keyboard connected but gave up for fear of completely bricking my OS. More then likely I caused this issue by using google for help rather then coming here first. Again any help is appreciated and thank you in advance.

Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
With the command you installed the PulseAudio VolumeController (another configuration tool like the Sound Settings). But pulseaudio is the basic sound server in LM (and other Linux systems) and you wrote:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install pavucontrol
What did you install and uninstall with which command or what action?I believe this is due to installing/uninstalling PulseAudio
And which midi device is meant?whilst trying to get a midi device setup
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
It was my wife's midi keyboard, a Casio I think? She had a usb port on the back of it which broke so we tried using a midi to usb adapter but it wasn't playing nice with Linux. I was trying to get it setup on my computer but we ended up just using it on her windows machine as it was easier for her. I really don't remember what I did, It was more then a few months ago and I haven't had any problems until the recent issue with the USB headset. Is it possible to purge all audio and start fresh? I am more then willing to do so if possible. Once again TY.
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Yes, we can uninstall and reinstall it. But please make a manual timeshift snapshot before, so you could easily restore the actual state, if something goes wrong. Close all sound related programs which may be open (three lines, one after the other):Is it possible to purge all audio and start fresh?
Code: Select all
apt remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio
apt install alsa-base pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Hey HAWR, I made the time shift backup, ran the commands, logged out and logged back in, same issue as before with PulseAudio. I tested my headset again and it is working but PulseAudio is still stating "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...". Again ty for the help.
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
This is a success. In your first post you wrote:I tested my headset again and it is working
Then let's try reinstalling the PulseAudio VolumeController and test it again:My logitec usb headset will not work.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pavucontrol
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Hey HAWR, ran the command, logged out/in, PulseAudio is still stating "Establishing connection to PulseAudio. Please wait...". I tested my headset again and it is still working. Applications like Audacity and OBS Studio are able to detect the Logitech headset microphone as a ALSA input device. I still don't know how to fix the issue with the PulseAudio stating trying to connect, I'm not even sure if it is an issue as things are working? I don't really need the GUI interface for PulseAudio as I seem to be able to select the headset as my input device via the default Sound Preferences. I'm fearful the message Pulse is producing is an indication of a larger issue. Lemme know what you think and again ty for the help.
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
You're welcome I don't know, why it don't work (it could be related to your audio software OBS. I already had a case where OBS caused a problem), but when all is working now after the reinstall of the sound system, there is no need for pavucontrol. You can remove it with the following command:
If your problem is solved now, please edit you first post in this thread and add [SOLVED] to headline.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove pavucontrol
Re: Audio issues - possible incorrect driver installed
Seems to be working now. Really appreciate the help!
