No sound from iMac 2017 with Mint Mate 20.3

Post by Ali-bear »

Hi,
Long time Linux user here, happily using Mint Mate in recent years on a Samsung laptop built for Windows-8.
Now I've upgraded to a refurbed iMac 2017 with dual-boot into Mint Mate. Once I'd sorted the dual-boot it all works very well until I realized there's no sound from the built-in analogue/speakers. I do get sounds from eg a USB headset.
I've done some searches and seen various advice but none seem to provide a solution that works. So I'm here to ask for your kind assistance.
I have tried upgrading to the newest kernel version and doing a pulseaudio -reinstall but the problem remains.
In the sounds settings panel it says "Built-in Audio Disabled Off"

From reading other threads I surmise this means I have the Cirrus Logic sound chip for which the drivers are not available?
