[SOLVED] LM 20.3 NVIDIA Drivers

Post by GRAVEL »

I installed and reinstalled Linux Mint 20.3 Una 5 times on a brand new HP OMEN-25L desktop
and sometimes the process recommended the 510.73.05 driver other times it was the 470.129.06
Nvidia drievr metapackage.

When I chose 510 I had no display / the screen was bad I had to fiddle with grub and add NOMODESET
My actual choice is 470 and I have bad sound.
Perhaps the following will tell someone something:

Code: Select all

[ 7.041947] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=3 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input25
[ 7.041974] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=7 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input26
[ 7.041996] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=8 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input27
[ 7.042018] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=9 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input28
[ 7.042039] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=10 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input29
[ 7.042061] input: HDA NVidia HDMI/DP,pcm=11 as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.1/sound/card1/input30
I do not know what is wrong.
These speakers worked before on an older computer.
I suppose NVIDIA and LINUX have never been close and married.

Are you using the MATE desktop? There is currently a bug in Xorg and the result is the Nvidia-510 driver does not work the the MATE desktop on LM20 versions.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags [code]Results[/code]. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware and will give us an idea of what drivers are being used for sound. Usually, Nvidia drivers are only used for graphics.

If your computer is very new, it is possible a newer kernel may help.

Update Manager - View Tab - Linux Kernel

Should open on the 5.13 kernel page. Mouse click on the top line (5.13.0.44) & select Install.
Restart equipment..

The spacing of the output appears to have changed, but I do not see any additional information. I do not know why the formatting might be different.

I do want to point out that while the sound goes through the Nvidiia hardware, the Nvidia graphics drivers are not controlling the sound.

Audio:
Device-1: Intel Comet Lake PCH cAVS vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 00:1f.3 chip ID: 8086:06c8

Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.13.0-44-generic

From what I could find, there is a F.21 version of the UEFI available, but HP did not list what was changed. :?

I do not know what "bad sound" means, but I suggest checking Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues.

Or you could also try the 5.14-oem kernel. Many newer HP laptops have been getting better performance with that kernel. If you want to try it, install the latest 5.14-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and reboot.

What is the purpose or function of

Code: Select all

NVIDIA TU106 High Definition Audio vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.1 chip ID: 10de:10f9
Sound Server: ALSA v: k5.13.0-44-generic
if I may ask ?
--------
No better sound than before. AKA Bad sound means mostly inaudible.
My desktop is not a laptop
I did what you said and replaced the kernel

Code: Select all

 uname -r
5.13.0-44-generic
--------
I'll try 5,14 later because for now I need to take a break because I need that desktop to work ; not just test solution for sound.

Thank you very much for helping me SMG !!!

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand the question. Your computer has more than one piece of audio hardware (which is why there are two devices listed). They both are using the snd_hda_intel driver (which handles sound for Intel, AMD, and Nvidia). The sound server being used by both is ALSA.

Possibly some of the links in the tips topic to which I linked can help with that issue.
GRAVEL wrote: Thu May 26, 2022 7:43 pmMy desktop is not a laptop
I understand that, but I was thinking perhaps something HP does with its hardware might be a better fit with the 5.14-oem kernel. So far, I only recall getting feedback from those with HP laptops, but maybe it will also help with your desktop.

Did

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and

Code: Select all

~$ uname -r
5.14.0-1038-oem
sound ihas not changed.

I already looked up Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues.
but I can't make sense of it

We already checked your drivers (the first part) and they are installed.

The next step is to install pavucontrol.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install pavucontrol
And then see if the options for adjusting volume in it (there are more options than the basic sound options in Linux Mint) can help.

When dual-booting with Windows, it's better to disable Windows "fast start-up" power option How to turn off fast startup or hybrid sleep in Windows. Sometimes just doing that will clear sound issues.

By the way, the second post in the Tips topic is a link to Ubuntu sound troubleshooting tips in French.

There is no dual boot here. I formatted the 3 disks before I installed Una.
I had already saw MrEen posts.
I had already checked the card with alsamixer and pavucontrol. And the following lines appeared after stopping pavucontrol :

Code: Select all

(pavucontrol:6886): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 00:02:38.340: gtk_notebook_get_tab_label: assertion 'list != NULL' failed

(pavucontrol:6886): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 00:02:38.342: gtk_notebook_get_tab_label: assertion 'list != NULL' failed

(pavucontrol:6886): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 00:02:38.348: gtk_notebook_get_tab_label: assertion 'list != NULL' failed
How do I proceed to replace F.20 with F.21 in

Code: Select all

Mobo: HP model: 8704 v: 00 serial: <filter> UEFI: AMI v: F.20
date: 08/27/2021
I have also tried this command :

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-settings

(nvidia-settings:3057): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 02:33:24.524: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
** Message: 02:33:24.639: PRIME: No offloading required. Abort

You would have to check with HP to see if there is a way to update the BIOS if you are not using Windows.

Are you having a problem with the graphics? The Nvidia drivers and programs relate to the graphics on your computer.

I have already explained, the sound drivers are snd_hda_intel and have nothing to do with the Nvidia drivers or Nvidia programs.

The links in the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues are the ones I use when helping others.

Please provide the output of aplay -l, and the output of pacmd list-sinks while a song or video is playing on your computer. Please make sure something is playing sound when you run the second command even if you can not hear the sound.

Re: LM 20.3 NVIDIA Drivers

Post by SMG »

This part indicates your system uses the ALC1220 sound chip.

Code: Select all

carte 0 : PCH [HDA Intel PCH], périphérique 0 : ALC1220 Analog [ALC1220 Analog]
I found a couple of topics referencing it. In one, the person indicated the front ports of their motherboard had sound, but the rear ones did not. You have a slightly different system, but that is something to keep in mind if you do have an option to change where the speakers are attached.

Some of the lines which seem key in the next output are the below.

Code: Select all

1 sink(s) available.
	volume: front-left: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB, front-right: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB
	        balance 0,00
	base volume: 65536 / 100% / 0,00 dB
		alsa.name = "ALC1220 Analog"
		alsa.id = "ALC1220 Analog"
	ports:
analog-output-lineout: Sortie ligne (priority 9000, latency offset 0 usec, available: yes)
There is no volume coming through, but the speakers are available.

One tip from MrEen in this post is:
First thing to try is to run alsamixer in the terminal and arrow over to the Headphone column then use the up arrow to give it some volume. Yes, I know you're not using headphones. Some systems require this.
The person requesting the help found, "I had to turn the microphone sound way up, and run the command for everything to work." (Their problem was with the speakers and not the microphone so sometimes weird tricks help.)

If that does not work, MrEen then suggests running the following (which the other person did have to do in addition to turning up the microphone sound):

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf <<<'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek'
and then rebooting and testing the sound. If that does not work, you can undo it with:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf
If neither of those work, this post has a different suggestion to try.
You would first run the below to open the alsa-base.conf file for editing in the GUI text editor xed.

Code: Select all

sudo -H xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
and then add the following two lines at the end.

Code: Select all

# ALC1220 dual codecs for Gaming mobos
options snd_hda_intel model=dual-codecs
Save the file (and ignore the warnings). Shut down and then reboot and see if the speakers work.

Hopefully, one of those suggestions will work.

It means you are not looking in the correct place for information about your kernel. Linux Mint does not use mainline kernels. The link you provided is for mainline kernels.

Linux Mint uses kernels maintained by Canonical (Ubuntu). When you open Update Manager and select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue, you are looking at Ubuntu kernels.

OK. I understand.
Thank you for providing me with answers to my questions.
I appreciate it.

I was away from this forum and must have reinstalled Linux Mint 20.3 Una ; 2 or 3 times.
I am back with kernel 5.4.0-117
I have connected 2 brand new speakers and sound volume on these speakers is still very low.
I have to turn up the volume to maximum to hear something.

This line of command

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf <<<'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek'
gave me sound as expected.

Thank you.

Please upgrade to a newer kernel. A 10th-gen Intel CPU needs to be using a much newer kernel than the 5.4 kernel.

The 5.13 and 5.15 kernels are available in Update Manager.
