Acer CB3-111-C670 not outputting sound to built in speakers

Post by Ryanlf999 »

Hello, I'm having issues with this Acer CB3-111-C670 ChromeBook not outputting sound to the built in speakers. I'm running Linux Mint XFCE with a 64 bit kernel. I've run through the forum and followed similar solutions, like downloading the files for the chtmax90980 sound card, but unfortunately I had no luck. After some experimentation and playing around, I installed PipeWire, which fixed the audio jack and got rid of "Dummy Output". Additional experimentation revealed that audio kind of works in a live USB of Gallium. It sounds quieter than normal, and when I adjust the sound above 100%, it makes everything sound choppy and fuzzy, even if I decrease the volume. I have to reboot to fix it. I decided to see if I could get some of the software on Gallium onto Mint to see if it would allow audio to at least work a little. As a result I got pasytray, but it didn't seem to make a difference. In my latest attempt at solving the problem, I followed the Tips for troubleshooting page by SMG, including copying my asound file from Gallium to Mint.

Below are some terminal outputs as requested from the forums:

Here is my inxi -Fxxxrz output:

Thank you for the assistance, I really appreciate it! I've been trying to fix this issue in and out the past week.

I ran Gallium on my Pixel, but when I tried to switch to Mint 20, I couldn't figure out the sound. So I ran Kubuntu for a couple years. I just switched to Mint 21, and the sound worked fine when I used the taskbar icon. I then set up the keyboard shortcuts so the louder, softer, mute buttons (F8-10) did what they're marked. Also, I set F6 &7 to do brightness. So I'd say try Mint 21.

Hey, thank you so much for your response! Updating to Mint 21 did the trick! It's funny- after days of debugging, playing around with drivers, etc, the solution was so simple, just update your system!

I just have one small issue: Sometimes, the sound will completely stop and be replaced by a high pitched squeal. Even when I mute it, the sound will continue. It will either stop randomly, or stop when I put Mint into sleep mode and wake it up. Although I can't exactly predict when this happens, it seemed to happen a lot while running a game (specifically, I was running Brigador, I was curious how well it would run on ChromeBook hardware, it doesn't run well...). Brigador isn't an intense game to run, although I haven't ruled out something like overheating. But besides that, everything seems to be working fine.

Here's how I updated the system for anyone wondering. This Chromebook only has 16gb of onboard memory, so instead of going through and trying to make more space, I just decided to install Mint 21 rather than updating to it. I backed up the few things on the system and made a list of all the changes I made like key binds. I inserted a Mint 21 USB, chose to overwrite the current install, went through the typical set up, and waited.

Thanks again for your response!

NO sound as well .
Samsung Chromebook 3 running on core boot 4gb ram 16gb mem swapped a 256gb sd card in place of the weak mem it had also running Linux Mint XFCE 21.
Linux Mint 21 didn't fix my issue.
Mine is set up to my 55"tv through HDMI and that's the only way I get sound.
Also running a separate Keyboard/ mouse combo .
I can live with it till I get my Tower PC it's just an outdated chrome book anyways lol!

Hey NORD, does your ChromeBook output sound through the aux port? I'm curious if it's somehow related to the sound card drivers or something similar. Also, in your sound settings, what do you have selected for your output, if anything at all?
