Play delay in Quod Libet

When Quod Libet is launched, Control/Play from the menu or toolbar pauses for 5 seconds or more before a track plays. On many uses, play never starts. When a track is double-clicked, the Previous or Next button is clicked, play starts without delay. After play has started once per launch, it functions as expected thereafter.

Launching Quod Libet from a command line does not show any error messages.

The pause issue started with the upgrade from Mint 20.3/Mate to Mint 21. After the Mint upgrade, Quod Libet was version 4.4, which was upgraded to 4.5 with the same result.

Expected function, play with no pause, occurs on the same computer with LMDE 5/Cinnamon/Quod Libet 4.3 and Solus 4.2/Budgie/Quod Libet 4.5.

So the question is, what's going on?
