Having to reset Pulseaudio after reboot

Post by Moonraker »

I've upgraded to the latest version of Mint (Linux Mint 21 Vanessa).

Every time I restart or reboot the PC I find that the ability to hear any sound is gone.

Opening Pulseaudio, I find that the Output tab shows the Headphones selected (see pic); setting it back to "Line Out" restores the sound.

But, the next time I reboot it's set back to Headphones again.

Is there a way to make the "Line Out" selection sticky or make it the default?

Does this mean you did an in-place upgrade from LM20.3 or did you do a fresh install of LM21? I ask because I see this older topic of yours [SOLVED] Fresh Mint 20.1 install - no sound which has this post about an auto-mute setting you changed.

1) Yep, that was literally the first thing I checked, and 'auto mute' set to 'disabled' as it should be.

2) IIRC this was an in-place upgrade, not a fresh install. I'm not 100% sure about that.

I was searching trying to find out how to set "line out" to be the default but I didn't find anything that seemed like it was applicable.

Check with a live session of LM21 and see if there is sound or where the defaults are set.

We could also see if the below shows anything helpful.

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"

Here's the output of that command:

I found what sounds like a similar bug someone was having on LM20.3 Standard Audio Output and Input changes it's self after reboot #10931. Does that sound like the issue you are currently having?

This might also be similar [BUG] Linux Mint Cinnamon does not remember sound sources #11117 .

I'm not sure where else to check as to why it might be switching.

Yep, that sounds very much like what I'm experiencing. Not a life-or-death problem, but it's annoying.
