Macbook - Speakersound not working (Mint 21)

Post by WolfMint »

Hey,
I have recently took the step to install LinuxMint on my Macbook as replacement for MacOs. Everything seems to work fine except for the sound from the internal speakers. I have already tried to play around with the pavucontrol method as advised on the forum but that did not work. Any idea to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for my lack of knowledge of Linux, this is the first time switching based on friend recommendation.

Welcome to the forum, WolfMint.
WolfMint wrote: Tue Nov 15, 2022 11:23 amEverything seems to work fine except for the sound from the internal speakers. I have already tried to play around with the pavucontrol method as advised on the forum but that did not work.
I checked the audio information.

Audio:
Device-1: Intel Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel
bus-ID: 00:1f.3 chip-ID: 8086:9d70
Device-2: Broadcom 720p FaceTime HD Camera driver: N/A pcie:
speed: 5 GT/s lanes: 1 bus-ID: 03:00.0 chip-ID: 14e4:1570
Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-52-generic running: yes
Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes

Then did a search and found this Speakers not working - Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio where the one provided answer mentions making changes in ALSA. Maybe that will help.

Also, if you have not yet tried MrEen's tips mentioned in Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues, I suggest giving them a try.

Hi SMG,
Thank you for reverting back on this.
I have tried the steps for the ALSA method (via your link), but sadly that did not solve the issue.
Running inxi -Axxx and snd_hda_intel still shows the same output as I enclosed below. Where it seems to have correctly installed the Intel Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio driver.
Not sure what other options I have?
Best,
WolfMint

Did you review Mr Een's tips in the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues link I provided?

Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

aplay -l
and the output of

Code: Select all

pacmd list-sinks
while a song or video is playing on your computer.

You disabled auto-mute in ALSA and made sure it was disabled?

The data you posted is showing zero volume and indicates it is muted.

Code: Select all

1 sink(s) available.
	volume: front-left: 0 / 0% / -inf dB, front-right: 0 / 0% / -inf dB

	muted: yes

Is there a physical sound mute button on the laptop?

According to MrEen's Sound Tips, columns with MM are muted. Maybe if you change the one column to not be muted that will help? I don't know how Macbook hardware might differ related to sound to know if that might help, but the sink info did indicate something was muted.

Hi SMG,
There is no volume mute button. I also tried clicking all F buttons to ensure that nothing pops-up.
Also tried all the steps you provided in the link. Very strange..

So changing S/PDIF so it was no longer muted did not help?

Maybe someone with Apple hardware experience will have some ideas.
