Experiencing various audio issues on HP laptop

Post by holmes »

I'm new here so please let me know if I left out any important info!

I am running Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon on HP Pavilion dv6. Whenever I plug a device into the audio jack, it malfunctions somehow - I tried to use some troubleshooting tips on here, but nothing helped much, and I couldn't find a topic on a similar enough issue, so I thought I'd try and ask if anyone has a solution to my problems myself.

Laptop's in-built speakers work fine, however when I try to use headphones, the speech just doesn't come through. I tried to use headphones on Discord calls but I could not hear anyone (first I thought that maybe that could be because the headphones I was using also had an in-built microphone, however when I tried different headphones without a microphone, the problem persisted). The mixing on music also comes out weird, with the sounds that should be in the front of the track (vocals and/or the main melody) not coming through, or the sounds being much more muted than if I just listen to them on the in-built speakers. That's especially annoying when I'm messing around in LMMS, as that means I can't use headphones because the audio will come out weird through them.

A second issue I am having is that when I plug in speakers and if there is nothing playing, they constantly give out feedback. I read here that installing an equalizer might help here, and it somewhat did, however the issue was not fixed (what I ended up doing when i needed the speakers was that turned them off completely when I didn't need the sound - which came through as intended, and also stopped the ).

Is there a fix for that? (Or alternatively: could the issue be the headphone/speaker jack itself?)

Welcome to the forum, holmes.

Could you let us know what troubleshooting tips you used?

Some people have run into similar issues with Discord that I recall being related to a setting in Discord. I don't recall if those topics were in the Sound forum or the Software & Applications forum, but maybe if you search on Discord you will find them.

One of the hard things about searching for similar issues with Pavilions is HP made many models with the name over the years. :|

I wonder if that is related to PulseAudio's timer-based scheduling. It can be disabled. MrEen has it listed in his tips.

I installed software that was suggested might help (specifically with the speakers issue, but I did hope it would also help with headphones) - the PulseAudio Volume Control (which is also just useful by itself anyway) and the audio equalizer

Thanks, I'll look that up and see if I find the solution there

That's true, I and my brother both tried to resolve the issues by looking them up, but no luck

Will check that out and see if it helps. I don't have plug-in speakers at home though, so the update on that specifically will have to wait. I'll see if that might also help with headphones problems in the meantime.
