Running Mint on Gateway GWTC116-2BK No Sound

Post by DGT »

Hi, I'm new to Linux and have installed Mint on a cheap Gateway GWTC116-2BK. All I see for my audio device is Dummy Output and there is no sound.
I walked through viewtopic.php?f=48&t=363010 with no improvement so I ended up wiping everything and started with a fresh install of Mint so that if someone wants to help me, we're starting with a clean slate.

I bought two of these laptops, one is running Windows and this one is running Mint. The Windows laptop shows the sound card as being Intel SST.

Here is the output of inxi -Fxxxrz

Welcome to the forum, DGT.

I did a search on this forum for GWTC116 and found two topics which indicate this laptop model is problematic with sound.
Cheap Gateway Laptop with Linux Mint 20.3 No Sound, Dummy Output Showing from late March
Sound hardware not detected, pavucontrol shows only dummy output from mid-April

I suggest going through those topics to identify your specific hardware. If your computer has the same hardware, then custom compiling a kernel may be the only solution at the present time other than using a usb sound card.

Thanks SMG. I appreciate your help. Thankfully, I'm just planning on using this machine to run OctoPrint for a 3D printer so sound isn't absolutely essential, but I was hoping to be able to convert the other PC to Mint for learning Linux. But then again, what better way to learn Linux than by troubleshooting your own machine? :D
