Linux Mint on Acer C771-C4TM Chromebook no sound

Post by moonbounce »

Hello,

I have an Acer C771-C4TM Chromebook I installed Linux Mint on just today. The system firmware was flashed using Mrchromebox firmware (https://mrchromebox.tech/#fwscript). I have been trying a few different distributions with similar results namely Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and a couple customized versions of Debian and Ubuntu with preconfigured software for HAM radio. In all instances everything works fine except audio. I get no sound and only have dummy output as an option and at this point I do have what looks like my sound card appearing in the sound settings (Digital Stereo HDMI Output) after . I've tried nearly everything I could find from googling and it seems much of the time the fix is hardware specific. I tested the HDMI port and the headphone jack without success. I'm a relative newbie to Linux and pretty lost when it comes to getting drivers to work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Version info:
Operating System: Linux Mint 21

Just wanted to post an update: I have sound but only with the use of an HDMI Audio Splitter from the onboard HDMI. The splitter has a headphone jack to plug in speakers/headphones so I think I'm good. Using the link to the troubleshooting instructions posted in the 3rd response in this thread I did eventually get the HDMI audio drivers to install instead of "Dummy Output". With that I used the splitter and headphones to get sound as I would need separate drivers to use the built in headphone jack. Though I would like to be able to use the onboard jack I'm content using the splitter as I would prefer using headphones and better quality external speakers anyway for HAM radio purposes. I don't know if applying solved to the title would be appropriate but I think for those that may be using an Acer C771 this is a viable solution since it seems this device may in general be troublesome when it comes to the other drivers and may just be less compatible. If you still want to try some things though I'm all for it and willing to experiment. Thank you.
